What do we think about Vega?

  • What has AMD been doing for the past 1-2 years?

  • It consumes how many watts and is how loud!!!

  • It is not that bad.

  • Want to buy but put off by pricing and warranty.

  • I will be buying one for sure (I own a Freesync monitor so have little choice).

  • Better red than dead.

Nice review: lots of games, stock and OC for both cards.

The $549 stock-clocked GTX 1080 FE wins 61 individual game benchmarks to the $699 RX Vega 64 Liquid edition’s 49 games. And even though both cards overclock decently, the overclocked RX Vega 64 only wins 41 game benchmarks with one tie, while losing to the overclocked GTX 1080 FE’s 68 wins and one tie.

The superior overclocking abilities of the GTX 1080 FE allow it to win in more games over the overclocked RX Vega 64 Liquid edition than it did at stock. And the GTX 1080 FE costs $150 less, and uses a lot less power.

Hexus show the RX 64 Strix getting much better thermals and they report far lower noise levels than reference model. Also up to 10% extra performance than reference despite same boost clocks etc.

So it looks from Hexus' review that the Strix is not throttling as much as reference and with the better cooling and noise.

Remember even 1080FE is able to OC about as well as the best AIB ones, it's the cooling solution holding it back. It looks like the same thing with Vega AIB cards, better cooling, better noise = better ability to hold higher clocks for longer and quieter.

I got 10c from gpu to hotspot difference, standard air 64. Plus about 4x 120mm fans, I dont think that would alter onboard gpu temps but I'd always check taking side of case off and placing a giant desk fan nearby and see if it changes anything

Gpu-z says my vega is drawing 6 watts most of the time, really? I swear the really old cards (top end hot etc) were always about 100w even at idle
 
so just like the ref card .. temps within 5 deg c noise and power consumption .. hmmm
still going to get one tho in oct got 2 360's waiting as soon as I pull the 290 out ..
 
If you look at the other reviews for the asus card, it is noticeably better than guru3d review..... Guru3d also stated that they disassembled the card "before" doing the review and that they didn't re-apply the paste, they just put it all back together.......
 
So long as they didnt scrape the old paste its possible it was ok but they should test it as sent even informally

Take the Dx12 and Vulkan games only and Vega is equal and 2% ahead on 4k res. I'd say AMD is hoping there is an increasing advantage to move away from the current reliance on dx11. Legacy is going favour its inclusion for a long time though

Oh dear. Other than having a freesync monitor, I don't know why anyone would buy Vega 64 over a 1080.

AMD really have taken the pee a bit with their pricing. I was hoping they would shake things up a bit as they were 14 months late to the party, but instead they seem to think it is ok to release an inferior card at the same price....whilst being 14 months late.

Pricing as we're seeing with all graphics cards is subject to market forces of supply and demand. Sooner or later equilibrium prevails and as long as Vega 56/64 are competitively priced then people at least have a choice. Remember the 1080 FE launched at £600 and soon shot to over £700 due to the same issues AMD are facing with Vega. Back then there really wasn't anything from AMD that compared to 1080 so Nvidia could set whatever price it wanted. From a personal viewpoint I very nearly bought a Palit Game rock 1080ti for £680 and only went with Vega 64 AC because I got it for £449 on launch day. So for me it was 50% cheaper but at worst case DX11 scenario only 35% slower. As I also only game at 1440p it made even more sense and I also have a freesync monitor so even better.

I'm off this week and yesterday I actually got to spend a good 2 to 3 hours just gaming. It was pure bliss on this Vega 64. I was not once bothered by the noise of the blower and I wasn't bothered at all by the heat output or power draw because I cant see it :) :D and all I was focused on was the game. Come on whilst gaming is anyone seriously bothered about the amount of heat or power generated by the card. IMHO this Vega card is much better than My Fury Pro in just about every department except the Tri-X fans on the Fury Pro did keep it whisper quiet. Also the blower fan on Vega at least exhausts the heat out of the case whereas the Fury Pro didn't so the fan on my 7700K doesn't ramp up as much. My 18 year old son is now rocking my Fury Pro and he can't believe the difference from his old 7950. All his games now play in Ultra :).
 
So asus shown us that you cant make gold from **** ... If they cant get it going better only Jesus or God himself could..

Cant see anyone not stupid buying v64 over 1080 aib.. Maybe with freesync monitor... MAYBE
