Poll: The Vega Review Thread.

What do we think about Vega?

  • What has AMD been doing for the past 1-2 years?

  • It consumes how many watts and is how loud!!!

  • It is not that bad.

  • Want to buy but put off by pricing and warranty.

  • I will be buying one for sure (I own a Freesync monitor so have little choice).

  • Better red than dead.

360w is low power mode? damn.

Actually they were for compute work, mining was just one of the compute buzzwords they stuck on the slide. In order for that to be of use somebody would have to make a new coin who's miner took advantage of them, and being easy to mine isn't exactly something that sees a coins value rise.

Wrong - have you seen results for the Vega56 in low power mode?? Nope, and in the normal power mode they used at the wall power was 290W,even with an overclock to the RAM and the new driver.

You know very well Vega64 dropped 200W in power just in low power mode with a decrease in gaming performance of 10% and you fully know people have reduced Polaris power consumption massively whilst maintaining mining performance.

Or do you seriously believe the RX580 cards being used for mining consume close to a stock Vega56??

Edit!!

Even on this very forum loads of people were discussing mining and said dropping core clocks had very little effect on mining performance.

The fact of the matter,is that with one experimental driver release mining performance has gone up 20% so what do you think is going to happen as more tweaks and drivers come out??

This is why the miners are buying them.

It will also pretty much kill Vega for gamers as prices will probably go up now.

Wrong
I took the 360w value from your link...

"Radeon RX Vega 64 2GHz Memory = 361 watts"

Yes and I know similar results have been observed in mining tests.

1: That was limited to Polaris (I'm not saying Vega doesn't react the same but I would expect it to react more like Fiji)
2: Doing that has little effect on Ethereum performance, that's why people dual mine Ethereum, using the spare power to also mine another coin at the same time.

1: 34.4 to 35.22 is hardly 20%
2: That driver (which was announced months ago) isn't designed to improve mining performance, it's designed to fix a bug in previous drivers that would have seen Ethereum performance drop drastically in the future as DAG epochs progressed.

Yes, blame it all on miners, nobody is buying it to play games or for workstation use (or both) despite being great for those (in some cases even after the price hike).

I'm sure it was something intelligent and thoughtful and above all, original.

As such, something unheard of in this thread of echos. I wonder why they didn't appreciate it.

All I did was suggest they change their roll of honour to roll of shame? Is that so bad... element of truth in there, maybe that's what hurt them?

We've been mislead by fake news, all good reviews apparently ;):

The fact the RX Vega 56 is also cheaper and faster than the GeForce GTX 1070 means that for around $400, the RX Vega 56 is absolutely where your cash should be going.” -Forbes

Radeon RX Vega 56 is a solid win and Radeon Vega 64 squares off well versus rival solutions.” -Hot Hardware

“The RX Vega 56 is a more significant victory as it means the GTX 1070 is no longer the fastest card at the $399 price point.” –PC Perspective

The real story is gaming—holy balls, [RX Vega 56] is doing pretty great at this price.” -Linus Tech Tips

It'll be interesting to see how the Asus ROG v64 Strix performs in comparison to the blower and liquid models. It's looking real nice and it sounds like it's being engineered from the ground up for Vega which is a refreshing change to the parts bin mentality we've seen used on older Asus gpu's like the Hawaii DCUII's

That honestly just looks more or less like the strix cooler they have on the 1080, 480 etc.

It looks very nice............... and very expensive :p

Not anymore.

But he doesn't compare the power usage with a 1070, only the total power of the system running the Vega 56.

If their FE optimized 1070s are anything like mine then they are doing that 31 mh/s @ 100-110W.

Plus people already mining on 1070s, like me, haven't paid over £350 for a card, how much will a Vega 56 be?

Fact says othervise. It fixed the problem AND brought more performance.

I think for this threads poll i would add: "too little too late too much money"

That would be my choice.
In fairness, all of the existing options can be summed up as "I hate AMD" vs "I'm an idiot fanboy who'll buy anything AMD", it's a pretty biased poll in it's phrasing lol

Nope, those new driver scores are the same as what the 64 and 56 were doing with the old driver too:

It is a bit....
--------

I just got this email..... with the new pricing none of those quoted statements are as true now as the were, i do wonder how many of those quoted reviewers would like to retract those statements with AMD's new pricing of these cards?
