I've noticed a large variation in the effectiveness of Super Unleaded from different brands (maybe even different stations). So thought it might be a good idea to share experiences for the people who use it.

I'm judging on the extra grunt felt BTW, so other factors may have an effect, but this is generally judged over a tanks worth over a few weeks.

ESSO 97 - Lodge Rd. Southampton - no different to regular.

Total 97 (their 95 is called "Premium", the 97 is even more branded up) - Top of Hill Ln. Southampton - Good Stuff!!! :D

Shell 97 - Keele Services M6 - Erm, so so. I have however heard good things about the >100 stuff just inside Lancaster as you enter from the north.

Gulf 97 - Windermere - Well on Par.

BP Ultimate (97) - Various places - Never been impressed, better than the Esso tho. :(

Anyone else found anything good?

Apparently I should be using 98ron rather than 95ron in the 172 but in all honesty I've never noticed any difference between the two. I tend to get my fuel at either Sainsburys or Asda, purely for the price, and high pump usage.

I only ever use Shell in the 420, won't touch anything else.

The last two tanks have been of V-Power and that's not because it gives me anymore power... it's just to make use of any detergents in the fuel and also to minimise the chance of det while hooning.

Not to mention V-Power now costs about the same as normal unleaded used to and seeing as how I now go through a tank a month rather than a tank a week, I might as well use it.

Unless your car was mapped for 97ron initially, you're probably not going to see any performance gains from it.

So? You could say the same about an old Subaru Impreza or Evo 3.

My car might be an old Rover, but it's not exactly a 1.4 used for pootling down to the shops.

Don't see the difference, I rarely get to hoon and just commute on motorways. Usually fill up at shell or sainsburys. Might try some Super stuff (dependant on price), purely to see if I get any extra miles to the tank as claimed.

If that age of 306 has a knock sensor, I'd bet it's only to retard the timing to save the engine from damage, not advance it to gain power from supergreen.

I've tried a few, as I was curious to see if it made any differences as the 172 is mapped for 97/98. I couldn't tell any differences between standard Shell, Sainsbury's or Sainsbury's Super. On V-Power it seems to feel better, but it's not really that noticeable.

I do tend to stick to V-Power though, mainly because Shell is at the end of my road, well priced and open longer hours than most local filling stations. If I'm caught short, I'll put (almost) anything in however.

Personally from personal usage i'd have to say it depends on the engine.

One bike I had hated 97+ RON and would literally die if it had a full tank of the stuff (small single cylinder). The next bike was slightly better with 97 in (small V twin) every bike since then seems to have benefited from the 97+ stuff, one was a little smoother but more importantly with 95 on a cold morning it would backfire rather loudly on start-up. With 97 or 95 and a fuel additive this didn't happen.

Car wise i've noticed no difference in the two petrol car's (1.6 8v and 1.8 16v) I ran on 97+ other than my wallet, then I got the roadster it does seem to be smoother revving on 97+, it also recommends it's run on 97+. So my conclusion with nothing more scientific than my bank statement and my rear end acting as dyno is that smaller engines seem to benefit more but I haven't done enough tank full's in anything else to pass comment.

Also I find Shell to feel better than say BP Ultimate or Tesco's 99 stuff. I've got data from the last 15 or so tank full's but tbh it's a little early to conclude anything factual so always put it down to being a brand thing rather than factually proven.

Used to use Sainsbury's SUL- noticed no difference. Now I use V-Power and notice no difference other than the fact my car runs a little rougher when its doing its "run super rich to warm up the CAT" trick.

Still continue to use V-Power though because the thought that I may lose out on 5 bhp if I don't keeps me up at night :o

Considering remaps at the moment and the thought of getting the car mapped to 95 RON has crossed my mind...
