The Wire - Series 1

I'm glad you've stuck with it and enjoyed it - this show offers some of the finest scriptwriting and characterisation ever seen on TV.

The fact that it's finite and ends within five series makes it all the better. You can now get all 60 episodes in a boxset too, at an insanely good price.

Loved Omar, was easily my favourite character. Did take me a few episodes to get into and i dont feel the quality is as consistant throughout as it was in the first couple of seasons. As a whole though, it really is great tv and ive been lost since finishing it.

I can recommend creator David Simon's book - Homicide a year on the killing streets. He spent a year with full access to the Baltimore homicide unit and its interesting to see where some of the characters and situations in the show came from. Good stuff.

The Wire is the best show ever put on television.
Its about the characters, its about the plot, each series is a 12 hour film and those then go on to tell the whole story across the 5 seasons, all interwoven.

Indeed, it is really fantastic.

Ive been watching through the wire and am half way through season 4 at the moment. Yes it IS quite a slow moving show, but the storylines and characters are definately worth it.

Just finished watching Season 2. Erm, it is very, very slow isn't it? Stayed with it throughout though. I'm expecting better from Season 3.

If you were expecting action, explosions, and Jack Bauer killing 20 terrorists per episode, you have come to the wrong place!

The wire is fantastic though - real character-driven drama with excellent acting. For me it's up there with the best TV series (such as Rome, Sopranos, Band of Brothers, Dexter, Battlestar Galactica etc).

Funnily enough this is the second thread today I've read that delves into The Wire...

Season 2 (according to what I read earlier) is regarded as a bit of a "slow" season, due to introducing lots of characters and stories, a change from season 1. It does then "pick up" again in S3-5.

Watching it through for a second time, you see bits in S2 that you didn't see on the first watch.

I've actually just ordered the first couple of series, and aiming to get through watching them over the next couple of months or so, based on recommendations from others on here :)

thought it was boring too!! Now The Shield is a different kettle of fish!! Killer programme

Talking about TV shows and not to hijack the thread, if you ever get the chance to watch Boston Legal please do, for me it was the best show on TV in absolutely years, comedy drama current affairs, it was excellent, James Spader as Alan Shore was just exquisite, please give that a look if you get the opportunity!!

The Shield and The Wire are very alike, although The Wire starts off slower.
