The Wire

I finished The Wire some months ago and am now watching The West Wing ( half way through season 3)

In terms of acting and screenplay it is every bit as good. I just think it appeals to less people because drugs, gangs and violence are deemed more entertaining than politics (although The West Wing is a lot more than just politics)

I recommend it highly.

Also advise watching Breaking Bad, True Blood, Dexter and Arrested Development.

The writing and character development is miles better than it is in The Shield.

If The Wire is all talk and no action then The Shield is the complete opposite of that. It's still a good show though. Lots of fun.

I think it might be a good idea to watch some utter crap just to lower your expectations again :p

I started watching this last week, finished the first four episodes of season 1. It's really good so far, even though it is a bit slow, which is not a bad thing.

I am enjoying it so far and hope that the quality remains throughout the next 4 seasons! I think my favorite character so far has to be the crack head CI! :D

Don't worry, once it gets going you'll be having to stay really focussed to keep up with it. It's kinda relentless!

I keep hearing good things about this, I would probably buy into it if the price was £45 instead of £65 for the boxset.

Buy series 1 in CeX. Watch it. Trade it in against series 2. Watch it. And so on. Sell series 5 back to them when you're done with it.

It'll cost you about £20 all told.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it. But The Shield is also well worth a watch. I thought i wouldn't watch as good a series as The Wire until i started watching The Shield. Im now on Season 7 and absolutely love it

The Wire is cool mostly, some filler in there too for defo.

Spoiler alert!

I loved the fact that Major Bill Rawls was a 'closeted homosexual'! I told my mates who had loaned me the DVD's and they were like "what???". Season 3 (can't recall the episode) there is a scene where this dude walks into the gay bar - with the gay pron on the telly. You get a flick of a shot of Rawls sat at the bar, not in uniform, with a huge smile!! I had to check after to prove to my mates.....

After watching The Wire I was convinced think I'd ever watch a better series. I watched Oz next and was surprised that I found it to be even better. I'm on season 7 of The Shield (got the complete boxset for £36 including 8% quidco) and honestly, I think its better than both. I've got the complete boxsets of all though.

I remember it, and also remember spending two series waiting for them to make a plot out of it - but they never did.

There was some graffiti in the toilet saying Rawls sucks **** or something along those lines that Landsman found in season 5 I think :D

The thing that impressed me most about the Wire was it's complete and utter lack of fear of doing the last thing the audience expected or wanted. Harder to explain without spewing spoilers all over the place but there were some genuinely refreshing parts for both the characters and storyline.
