Which is best to play with a controller? Which has a better story?

Having never got past the first hour in either simply because of boring combat, I feel I'm missing something. It seemed the combat was very... Repetitive, swing your sword. Done.

Which one should I tackle? I own the second on PC, so would need to buy the first as I cba to setup my 360 haha, so need to get my moneys worth!
 
So, started Witcher 2 last night. Only got as far as escaping the prison. (after playing all the interrogation scenarios and training). This time, I lowered the difficulty to easy to get me into the combat. Enjoying it a lot more. Still a bit lost with the story...
 
Playing the second with the pad so I can relax and play on the big screen. I am a completionist and that in it's self is sometimes a problem in games like this. I will purposely put off the story to complete ALL side missions and this can end up me going off for hours on end which makes me forget why I left off etc etc. How well does the game do the secondary quests?
