Picked up the witcher for 3.50 on steam sale, started playing, control system is ludicrously annoying. It makes me want to ram my fist into the monitor and go on a spine snapping spree.

Is it just me or is the control system actual pants ?, is there anything you can do to improve this or is it just a case of grin and bear it and eventually you get used to it ?

Stick with it, the combat becomes much easier once one you're used to the control system, it took me a while too, but eventually things clicked and I really enjoyed the game from there on.

I ended up using an xbox controller for mine, felt a lot better in terms of controls.

I found it annoying at first, but after finishing the game i ended up thinking that the controls are actually one of the games biggest strengths. You know you can choose between different camera angles? I prefer over-the-shoulder view to isometric tbh.

Combat is actually quite brilliant once you get in to it imo.

I don't know what people get so annoyed about with The Witcher's combat. It's not particularly hard - click, wait, click, wait... wait, click. Oh, look that's not doing too much damage. Pause. Switch stance. Unpause. Click, click.

Oh crap, use a bomb.

It's simple, but effective.

I assume OP is not using over the shoulder OTS view.

Because OTS view is perfect in The Witcher, control-wise.

This is how I played the game - it's by far the best method for exploration and taking on small numbers of enemies. You can always zoom out to a tactical view if you're being swamped by a large number of enemies.
