The witcher - stuck!

OK, so i deceided to change game genre's, I'm an RTS guy with dabblings in FPS, and FPS has been boring me lately so i thought i'd try something new in the form of the witcher.

Must say i'm loving it, but i have a feeling that i have missed something along the lines, i've done all the tack in the castle, and now i'm on the outskirts of visihm (sp?) done everything i can (i think :S) and have rescued abigale (after doing her ofc ) and confront the mob, tell them all to get lost, and on our way back 'the beast' is in our way, i can't or the life of me defeat it!

I'm using tawny owl, blizzard, and the one that regenerates your vitality, along with other food effects, and have drawn from the circle of power. Oh, and my sward is coated in spectre oil, i just cannot kill it at all, any tips?

PS, Abigale dies almost instantly after the fight starts, and rarely gets a chance to heal me...

It only takes about 3 hits from the beast to kill me, and one of those hits will almost always cause me to bleed, so i'm just stood there on the spot bleeding whilst all 7 barghests are attacking me.

Every time i try and stun it, it doesn't get knocked down, and i've upgraded my stun spell with my experience points too.

Abigale never seems to get back up for me even if i run around for 5 mins

PS: i'm doing the game on the hard setting, could this be the reason for the difficulty? (always select the hardest setting when playing games - untill i find it impossible and select the next difficulty level down)
