The WoW factor card

I think I might be wowed the moment we see a graphics card with high end capabilities, thats silent, draws less than 100w, costs £100 or less, and comes in a tiny form factor...

Of course whats the likelihood of that...

I'm pretty sure PC monitors that do the same have been around for a long time, the fact the only work if you position yourself exactly makes them somewhat impractical.
 
There has only been two wow factor cards for me and thats the original Voodoo and the Radeon 9700pro. The Voodoo at the time was massivley faster than it's rivals coupled with 3Dfx Glide IMO transformed PC gaming into the power house it was back in the mid to late 90's. The Radeon 9700pro as it was ATi's first flagship card that was more powerful than it's rivals cards, it was also the first card were AA became a playable option without causing epic slow down. It was also the card that made PC gamers and the industry take ATi seriously.
 
Maybe I am imagining it but I seem to remember that a few years back when I'd upgrade to a better graphics card, there was a more noticable IQ improvement. These days it's more of an frame rate increase, some IQ adjustment sure, but not like it was five or six years ago.

I seem to see the biggest difference when I change from either team, green or red.

Your right the 'Wow' factor was better years ago when i went from a geforece 4 to a radeon 9800 and it was 'Wow' unlike my last 3 which were just a bit better than the last ie: 3850 - 4850 - gtx275 - 5850 all better than each other but definitely not The Wow factor :eek:
 
There was defo a noticable increase for example from a 8800gtx to a 4870 for me but I also think on occasions my expectations are just a little high. :D

Already been done - http://www.inition.co.uk/inition/products.php?CatID_=5 - went and saw them at their demo studio the other day. Quite impressive, although they would need specific games development for PC use - they don't work the same way as active/passive stereoscopic displays.

with the 4XXX series wasnt there a "WOW THERE CHEAP" factor.

it was the first time im years a gfx card came out was uber fast and cost half as much as most of the generations before it did
 
when the 8800gtx came out there was a massive wow factor there as it was a huge jump forwards, this has happened a few times in the past, and wil gain int he future im sure.
 
Ive just gone from a 8800gt to a 5870 and in all honesty i could not call the leap forward a wow factor moment! i think we all believe all the marketing hype surrounding the new cards so much! that when we commit to buying them we go home, put them in the pc and then tell everyone how much better it is to make ourselves feel better about wasting our money!
Now that was a WOW moment!!!!
