Never heard of it. no idea what the trailer is telling us. All I know is I want to see it because of that music. It got me interested.
Edit: rewatched it. Looks like its set during WW2!? Gold teeth, Jews? I will go all out and say the zone of interest is Poland?
Edit2: Checked on IMDB and yeah, WW2.
From the thread title, I thought it was going to be about people in some idylic rural hamlet protesting the construction of a new A-road through their land...
However:
"The commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp"
I saw this today. Quite hard of a film to comment on because I don’t want to colour any opinions!
It’s certainly horrific and harrowing but in a very ‘non-graphic’, ‘low rumbling’, ‘we the audience know exactly what’s going on’ sort of way - which is different. There’s no ‘girl in the red dress’ sledgehammer-type visual gut punches, nor anything like Sophie’s Choice in terms of showing any personal horrors.
Instead, it’s provocative in an entirely different way; it shows very benign human behaviour directly contrasting with inhuman behaviour, right next door… which somehow makes it all the more sickening - it really does beg belief that people could be so awful… tragic
There’s some very A24 use of sound, sparse but impactful. The credits for example has a very uncanny and nightmarish piece of music, which is worth staying a little for.
The presentation is very much a ‘snapshot in time’, without great emphasis on any particular story arc - so do keep that in mind and don’t expect to get heavily invested in plot developments.
One bit that particularly struck me:
At the end when Hoss said at the party he was just thinking about he could gas the room. Obviously it’s totally sick, but isn’t that just the weird sort of thing that everyone does - get fixated on little questions and internal narratives when they’re being anti-social? Very human.
If I were to give a score, I’d say 7.5/10 - it held my attention, I think it accomplished what it set out to very well, personally I prefer a little more character narrative… but obviously this isn’t what it was going for.
Saw it last night and thought it was brilliant. It's genuinely a film that will stay in my memory forever.
That said if it wins best picture at the Oscars i can imagine lots of average joes going to watch it based on the oscar hype and being very bored and disappointed in it given there are no action scenes and it's nearly all shot with static cameras.
