Dissagree, the guy who lost the memory card took reasonable action to remedy the situation.

The guy who took the phone commited theft, theres a world of difference there.

In Phate's defence, he dealt with it in a way that covered his back...i'm not sure he would have kept his job if he had used physical violence?

I'd have left it for the time being. The guy clearly wasn't going to keep it for ever, Phate has another phone anyway, he WILL have given it back even if it ended up taking a day or two.

We're hearing one side of the story only. I'm sure this other guy didn't go from "yeah, get me a new card reader whenever" to "I'M TAKING YOUR PHONE AS RANSOM" just like that. I'm sure with a lot of people it would never have got to this stage.

It's funny how certain types of people get themselves into these kind of situations.

Why didn't you just get him a £2 one from a shop/market?
Card readers are so cheap anyway, if you want one for 2 weeks, why not just buy one?

Indeed, the guy who stole the phone should not have been let out of eye contact as he could very easily damage it then claim it was an accident
