We're hearing one side of the story only. I'm sure this other guy didn't go from "yeah, get me a new card reader whenever" to "I'M TAKING YOUR PHONE AS RANSOM" just like that. I'm sure with a lot of people it would never have got to this stage.
It's funny how certain types of people get themselves into these kind of situations.

maybe but in what condition would the phone of came back in, all it would take is for him to damage/lose it and the whole problem would be escalated to another level.
Why didn't you just get him a £2 one from a shop/market?
Card readers are so cheap anyway, if you want one for 2 weeks, why not just buy one?
