Theft at work - RANT

Yes it sounds stupid to tell, but, if you think about it what would you have really done if someone took your mobile and didn't want to give it back (remembering you're in an office environment where everyone's watching). You wouldn't start a big argument over it and start shouting at each other, that's just as bad as telling on each other, and you certainly wouldn't have a scrap over it. What would YOU do if he took your mobile. Other than calling the police....

When boys and girls grow up and go into the BIIIIIIIIIIIG wide world of work.... you have these things called social skills. You would use these skills to sort things out like an adult, not resort to telling tales.

I see that it is annoying for you to have your phone stolen, but to be fair, he is right, you have something which is of value to him, he has something which is of value to you. If he had asked to borrow your phone as mis-laid it, they forgotten it, I'm guessing you'd be annoyed.

His response isn't the best way to go about say that he is very cross about it, but I can understand the feeling behind it. Someone I work with 'borrowed' The charger for my work laptop and has now lost it. Has said, don't worry, IT will replace it! Yes, but I am having to play sharing with a colleague! Not an ideal situation.

you are assuming that both sides are adults. please remember the guy took his phone obviously displaying a lack of communicational skills. you tried reasoning with a 6 year old? same principal.

to be honest it would never get the far because after having left the reader in the car, I'd have gone "****, I left the reader in the car, better get another as I promised to return it today". the problem with this situation is it's actually Phate's fault that it all kicked off. the other guy could've responded better, but his actions were justified to make his point.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if Phate is now the laughingstock of his office. I wouldn't want to show my face!

Well done, you have made yourself look a penis in front of most of your office and 2 managers all in one day over a petty argument

[TW] Fox and Sic are both bang on

my point is its not his bosses problem to deal with this, if I had been involved in this I would have just said for you to both sort it out yourself, you have something of his, he has something of yours, resolve it quickly and stop messing around on company time.

I'm not having a go at [TW]Fox....

as his posts (nearly) always come across as reasonably level and in most cases I agree. But (isn't there always LOL

I'd have left it for the time being. The guy clearly wasn't going to keep it for ever, Phate has another phone anyway, he WILL have given it back even if it ended up taking a day or two.

Whilst that is always an option, what would [TW}Fox do if the guy took Fox's car keys?:D

As for Phate he did the only thing you can really do in an office, without the other guy snitching later about pressure/agressive extraction of phone from pocket - usual back stabbing whinges etc, so by doing nothing and escalating as he said was proven in this case to be a good call - sometime office relationships are exactly like kindergarten!

Yeah and someone who snatches an expensive mobile phone right from their colleagues hands, when they've already bought them a new card reader clearly has the social skills to come to a solution in a reasonable manner.(sarcasm) I don't see how you can flame Phate at all. What could he have done? Say give me my phone back? Based on the actions of the guy who snatched it would be pretty safe to assume he wouldn't have said yes.

Were you not embarrassed by being taken to 1 side by your manager being told that you were acting pathetically? Im mean afterall, youre an IT director!!

I would have been embarrassed. Not the best sort of thing to be told in a work environment. Hope the other guy got the same treatment though, and I cant believe this has turned into a 7 page thread.

in his position i'd of taken the other guy to one side and apologised for initially making him think that id lost his property, and then apologise for forgetting to bring it in. I'd of then said that i'd just bought the phone, and id appreciate it back.

I'm not doubting that the guy over reacted taking his phone, but at the same time, phate borrowed something of his and misplaced it, showing a lack of respect for his property, so he did sort of have a standing point. By involving management phate has made himself look rather silly, and regardless as to whether the other guy was a tool or not it doesnt look good for him. Based on phates usual behaviour and him saying he is in a senior position in the company i'd expect better.

I dont think im flaming him at all, im just saying the whole thing is pathetic, doesnt need the 'OMG THEFT AT WORK LOLZ' thread title... or infact....probably doesnt need a thread at all !

I don't think your method would have worked to be honest.

I love this thread because you can repeat what everyone else is saying and a mod wont slap your wrists for spamming :p :D

I think Im going to copy and paste what other people have said in other threads now and turn them into 8 page monsters even though they are talking about "spec me a cheese". gz all.

OMG, 8 pages just to come to the conclusion that what you should have done is just got the phone back off him the NANOSECOND he took it.

I'd of leaned over the desk and grabbed it straight back, or gone round the desk and told the guy not to be such a pillock.
It would have escalated as far as necessary before said pillock gave it back.
Simple... end of and back to work.
Not posting on a forum "OMGZ LOLZ had me fonez nicked"

Get a grip.

So you were being completely useless and not giving him his reader back? Well done him imo.
