Im looking at purchasing a theme forest template so emailed them to see if I can use the theme on a test site first to tweak it slightly then move it over to the live site once it is ready. I got an email back from them stating that they are unable to give any support on licences and that I should seek a solicitor who specialises in licences.

For a £20 template??

Has anyone done anything simliar or do you need to activate the theme or something along those lines?

Thanks

Sounds like they misunderstood the question. That said, I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. Do you want to buy the theme first and use it wherever or get a free copy to test with? I think very few of them would let you do this. Once you've got the files you can just run off and use it. I haven't seen any themes with activation or authentication on them (so if you do just want to buy it and use it on a test site then that should be fine). The good ones provide live previews and fully detailed specifications so its quite easy to evaluate them before purchase.

Hi Gord

I want to purchase it then use it on a test site to make sure everything is working fine and possibly make a few minor changes. Once Im happy everything is going to work then I want to use it on the actual site and the test site will be deleted.

I'll give it a whirl though, I was only concerned in case there was an activation of somekind.

Ah, that should be fine then. I havn't seen a theme with any sort of activation or licence control. The nature of the product means most people buy them and don't share it because a) they've paid for it, and b) they don't want other people using the same theme!

Themes aren't licensed in the way software is, where you pay for a license per domain or per server. Once you have paid for a template, it's yours to do whatever the hell you like with - on the whole. Some may have some small print preventing removal of the author's name or website etc.

One thing I would say is make sure the template you buy provides you with the PSD of the design. Makes making amendment so much easier.

I have purchased templates from there before. Got the PSD files with it and support was brilliant for the themes. You don't need to 'activate' the themes. Just purchase it, install it, play with it, move it. It really is as simple as that.
