Theoretical 970/980 upgrade question!

I am planning to upgrade to SLI 970's/980's relatively soon but then I thought I might as well wait a bit longer for the 8gb versions to appear, my thinking behind it is two 980's will proooobably still be better at higher resolutions than the future 980ti right? or is that not safe to assume at this point? at least then I have 8gb of vram and two powerful cards that should last me a while, is there any news or rumours on when the 8gb versions will be appearing? or does anyone disagree with waiting a month or two for the 8gb versions instead?
 
Well either that or the smaller die process cards, I cant imagine one of them matching SLI'd 980's but I do want to wait for the 8gb models so at least then I wont have any VRAM concerns at all
