Theoretical Warranty Question

Hi,

One of the calipers on my car is sticking. I have an extended warranty with the manufacturer and the repairer has already agreed and authorised the work to fit a new caliper, but the part is on back order with no delivery estimate.

Since it could be months and I need to use the car, if I put on a second hand caliper so I can use the car in the meantime, and bring the car back to the repairer, will they tell me they aren't going to fit the new caliper since the replacement is functional? Do I have to refit the sticking one before I bring it back if that's even possible or sensible?

Maybe someone here has faced the same problem.

Surely the garage/warranty provider is the best person to ask this? It can't be an unusual situation these days

Last time I got a "courtesy car" from that place I had it for 3 days and they wanted £36 for the pleasure (for insurance they said).

I don't fancy paying that for 2 months.

You'd have to swap it back again with the faulty part, otherwise the garage would be basically committing fraud with the warranty company.

If you're going to the trouble of fitting a second hand one, then swapping it back again, why not just fit leave it on there and be done with it?

What car is this?

I'm struggling to believe they cannot get hold of a brake caliper.

Unless this is some rare vehicle?

Sounds like absolute BS to me, even a genuine manufacturerer part, a brake caliper isn't anything unusual that may need to be changed. Have you tried ringing round other dealership etc to see if they have one? Be interesting to see if they tell you the same thing.

And as above, no courtesy car?

Sounds really bad service imo, sounds like a massive fob off hoping people will just give up.

Agreed. Find out who the actual warranty provider is and call them directly and ask them. As above as well, find out the part number, but any competent parts desk should be able to bring it up. Find out if it is a stock issue across the board.

To be fair, I had a bit of calliper related grief recently, my car (Volvo V70) went back & forth to my garage about 3 times as apparently the particular calliper for my car - a 2006 D5 model - is in short supply and their motor factors kept sending ones that didn’t fit properly.
