There Will Be Blood - question?

It was originally meant to be two different actors playing the roles, with different ages. When Paul Dano was asked to play both roles after the firing of the other actor they just explained it as twin brothers and kept it ambiguous, presumably to conjure up exactly this pondering.
 
Real character. If I remember correctly, the actor was originally cast as the brother but ended up playing both. which made it confusing.
 
In the novel Oil! it's also two separate characters. I like the way they went with it though, to make you think it's a split personality disorder. Confused me at the time.
