hi all, i tried setting out in my car this morn, its an mk3 mondy, and there was a horrid grating sound coming from the nearside rear wheel / arch. It sounds like metal on metal, but you can only hear it when the car is coming to a stop, or just getting going - basically when it's going around 5-10mph.

It sounds like metal on metal.

Also I tried slowing without using the brakes and I could still hear it, any ideas what it could be please? I don't fancy driving it anywhere when its making such a sound.

Might be a stone stuck between the disc and the cowl (for the disk).

I had this on the 528, and it sounded just like a metal on metal nasty scraping sound. Took the wheel off and checked the area with a torch, saw the stone and removed it with a long screwdriver.

thanks for your replies. It was a stone in the wheel, jacked the car up, took wheel off and the 'penny' dropped :D. Slung the damn thing into the field at the front of my drive !! :)

It's amazing to think that a little pebble can cause all that noise! I still have mine in the glove box of my car! :)

hi all,

unfortunately i'm having to dig this thread up again as the problem is persisting. When I jacked the car up my girlfriend claimed that a stone dropped from it and I'm sure when I looked under the car before hand I didn't see any stones on the tarmac.

Anyway, we both presumed that was the cause, threw said 'cause' away and I took the car for a spin to see if the problem was still there. Drove around the block and did not hear a thing. So we both assumed that that was that.

Well, the next day I went for a drive, was going about 40-50mph, and a traffic light was approaching, put the brakes on quite firmly, and I heard the noise again. The next stop I put the brakes on lightly, and could not hear it. The next one I tested by putting the brakes down firmly again, and could hear it.

But what really baffles me is that the day when I first heard it... the day before I threw this stone away, it was making the noise even without me applying the brakes, but only when I was slowing to a stop, or just starting off from neutral.

Now though, it seems to only occur when I apply the brakes firmly, but sometimes doesn't happen at all. Really perplexed by this. I've rang my guy at the local garage and he says it could be brake pads, but this was just going on what I said as he didn't take the wheel off to have a look.

IF anyone can put these sypmtoms into a diagnosis I would be really grateful. Thanks.

Mine did this for a bit, gradually got worse and worse. Turned out to be the disks had heavily worn down. If you run your fingernail up to the edge of the disk you'll probably find a substantial ridge running around the circumference where it has worn - it's the pads rubbing on this that causes the grinding noise.
