What's the current recommendation for thermal compound? Small blob in the centre or a line?

If the latter then what's the die orientation on an Ivy Bridge Xeon?

You are opening a can of worms for opinions here, I would Google it and see a naked CPU of your model as I think its too new to be on Arctic Silver's site which does show the orientation and position of some AMD and Intel CPU's.

Yeah I tried that but can't find a pic of one unlidded. I'm assuming it'd be the same as any desktop Ivy Bridge but can't be 100% sure.

As for too new, it's a 2014 CPU.
