Was having some serious issues with my X1800 XT over heating, I though well I may aswell pop the gpu cooler off. Sapphire sure didn't want you to take the cooler off, still got the thing off some 12 screws later.
Could not believe that there was very little thermal compound on there, cleaned off the old stuff and then re-applied some new stuff. Put the card back together carefully, gingerly connected it up again to my PC and there was output.
Temps before I cleaned out all the dust and new application of the comound were 77 - 80 when idle. and 80 - 99 when gaming. Now idle is 60 degrees and after gaming it reaches 68, maybe 70. Don't even hear the fan running now, well I do, but it was no way as bad as before.
What amazes is me is how little compound they put on these cards and how they can get away with it !! Very pleased with this result, hopefully now I shan't get any hassle with it till I can afford to get an 8800 GT
