For the last few years I have used the pre-applied stuff with my self build's (MX-2 on my AC freezer 7 pro), or the intel stock cooler on another system.

I have bought a scythe mini ninja for my HTPC build but it doesn't come with pre-applied, so I thought I would buy some new stuff, either AS5 or MX-2, I am thinking MX-2.

I have some VERY old Arctic silver 5 (it must be atleast 4-5 years old now), and I think I just spread it over the core (pentium 4 days), with a old credit card and had good results.

As I am a bit rusty, can any one guide me in the best way to apply MX-2? Its going to be put on a C2D E5200. (I did check arctic coolings website, but their guide is for a GPU. The arctic silver's guide has guides for different CPU'S.)

Cool, I will go with that method then and hope it works well! Especially as I am going to be running passive lol! What did you use to spread it may I ask? I used the search feature earlier and it seems people have started using a freezer/sandwich bag and spreading it with their finger?

So you put a thin "line" down the middle of the CPU as shown on arctic silvers website, but used MX-2?

I just had another look at Arctic Coolings guide. Its not a GPU, can even see a PCI-E x16 and x1 in the piccie, shows I didnt pay much attention lol. Will I be able to "twist" the mini ninja once its been installed with the 775 socket clips? The guide shows to just put a blob in the middle of the CPU.

Thanks for the diagram. I think I will give the top left pic a try with the mx-2, although I wont put the paste right up to the edge of the cpu (so that it doesn't squeeze over it in to the socket).

I really hope the line technique works because I dont want to have to take the heatsink off again (I found the 775 clips are annoying with my arctic freezer 7). I still might go with the blob in the middle like arctic coolings website shows though.
