Thermal pads

I've recently bought stuff to build a new PC (cheap mobo, 2GHz Core Duo) and I've realised I've not bought any AS. Given that I'm not planning to overclock, I have a couple of questions: -

1. Do CPU's or heatsinks usually come with a thermal pad attached?
2. Given that I have no urge to o/c, will the temperatures be acceptable if I use the thermal pad rather than ordering some AS as well?

And also...

3. I have some thermal grease (no idea where from). Is this better or worse than the pad and an acceptable solution?

Thanks in advance...

New heatsinks will have paste applied when they come. It's usually pretty decent. And it will be fine if not overclocking.

well it depends on what heatsink you're using...

for example the stuff already applied on a tuniq tower is better than arctic silver ;)

I got my E2160 to 3.2Ghz with the stock HSF and the thermal paste delivered with it... should be ok :)

Cool - appreciate the replies. It's years since I last built from scratch and I'm a little nervous ;)
