Hey there, I've undone my two water cool loops in my PC, cleaning up my WC blocks etc ;

On my graphics card blocks, they have thermal pads on, however I've mindlessly binned the thermal pads (That I cut myself that came with the EK block), erm, what's a viable solution to use?

Is it possible to just use thermal paste :S?

Thermal paste is no good as the thermal pads are there to take up the gap as well. You can buy strips of thermal pads of varying thickness for a couple of quid each.

I have two 8800GT's here, they're dead..
Is it possible to take off the thermal pads on them and use on my 6870's (Assuming I cut them to size)?

You need to make sure you get the correct thickness.

That stuff you linked to is quite thin, perhaps less than 0.5mm?

Do you have any offcuts left from the ones you had before or do the instructions from the waterblock give any indications as to the required thickness?

EDIT

I've just found the instructions for the 6870 waterblocks. I assume it's the cards in your sig. you're water cooling.

They say that all thermal pads are 1mm thick so do a search for 1mm thermal pads.

You want Gap Fillers. Thats the proper term!
Either a thick copper shim (Has to be the exact right thickness) or a specific thermal pad type, which compress and give excellent contact.

There is a water cooling specialist that sells 0.5mm, 1.0mm and 1.5mm thick pads. They also sell the original EK ones but they are twice the price.
