I've had some problems with getting good temperatures on my Core 2 Duo in the past after refitting a heatsink and I want to get it right this time.

It's an E6750 and I'm using Arctic Silver 5. How much should go on and where should I put it? Should I spread it out myself somehow?

LOL I noticed on that guide that it mentions NOT to put your CPU in the dishwasher!

WHOOPS! :p I've been doing it wrong all these years!

The best bet is to do as AS say any put a 3cm line of AS5 along the cores. I usually spread it out with a finger in a sandwich bag, but I usually lap my heatsink so that isn't really required for you.

Just identify where the cores are and have a small amount on the heatspreader above them, the heatsink should spread it out plenty when its fitted.

@killari: I read that too, I guess I'll have to go back to fairy and water.

sorry, I should have said what thickness (very thin). If you are just applying the TIM (not spreading) then its best to line it up with the cores as widdyist's link shows i.e. c2d cores run vertical in relation to the writing on the heatspreader.

Personally, I do what creed does. Tiny smidgen in the centre and spread it out with a sandwich bag on my finger till its evenly distributed.

I just put a very thin layer across the top of the CPU...I'm guessing though that this is not the best way to do it. It's my first build. :-D

I've done it the way AC recommends on my E6750 with AS5 several times now, always works a treat and gives low temps despite my chip being woefully mountainous.
