Thermal paste?

Going to be removing the plastic parts covering the heatsink in my dell and to do that i have to remove the heatsink and i dont think dell use very good themal paste so i was thinking on replacing it with some good stuff or will the stuff on it be ok to reattach the heating sink to the q6600 @ 2.4Ghz with the same temp ?

Ideally I would recommend reapplying fresh paste.

Once you remove it you should clean the remains up from both CPU and heatsink and reapply, the MX3 (CLICKY) is the best stuff right now so you should get one.

MX3 is great stuff, grabbed myself some a couple of weeks ago and temp changes were good.

I've just re-applied using MX3. Temps have gone down by almost 20 degrees Celsius. Admittedly the old paste appeared to be failing.

AS-5 is old skool you have to wait 200HRs for it to cure(settle in)to get best temps and only then can you overclock your CPU. MX-3 apply and overclock straight away.

how oftern should you re-apply thermal paste? once every 4-5 months?

You can overclock straight away with AS5, 1C difference that AS5 has before it's cured isn't going to make any difference to your overclock.
