never done this before but need to reapply the thermal compound on my old stock pentium 4 HSF (SKT-775), so need to know what i need to buy, and how do i clean the old stuff off (it looks messy lol) also i seem to have what looks like 'dust mixed with thermal stuff' that has somehow spilt onto the board in lines around all four sides were the hsf is seated :( YUK

just wondering, when i remove a hsf thats been on for a long time does that mean i 'have to' reapply the thermal stuff because the old stuff has dryed on so it wont work any more? or will it just kinda 'melt' its way linking the hsf to cpu :)

Basically i will only be using this stuff once on my pentium 4 to prep it for selling, then itll never be used again for at least a year or more :( and at £15.24 for paste/cleaner/delivery this seems a bit much for single usage

i just need cheap as possible really im only gonna sell it anyway :) temps dont have to be too low (its current average of 40'c should be fine) i might just buy the stuff from elsewhere so i wont need to pay delivery (sry ocuk) :D

methylated spirits or Isopropyl Alcohol.... how much do they cost?

can i just spit on it :D:D

u can tell how i value my P4 now :p and to think that just a few years ago this chip was known for its 'jaw dropping performance' 3 GHz at stock WOW :D

in extension to this thread i think theres a problem with the temps on my Q6600.
firstly im not sure which temps on the above pic are correct but im starting to think that core temp is more accurate, which is bad becauase i have seem them rise to 60+ under load :(
i was never 100% happy with how the hsf was fitted on this one but couldnt seem to fit it any better and i didnt think much of the thermal stuff on there (3 white strips) so do i need to put some better thermal stuff onto my cpu (or did intel intend me to do this in the first place?)
because the compound on my older P4 775 HSF was much better and did the job
