Hi folks,

I've got a Thermalright XP120 cooling the CPU in my sig. It's been doing a sterling job of keeping the Athlon64 CPU cool to <55 degrees despite being clocked to >3ghz and overvolted.

I'm thinking of finally getting a cheap upgrade to a C2D (possibly an E5200), and was wondering whether this XP120 is likely to be up to the task relative to newer coolers. I can get an adaptor to reused the XP120 on a s775 CPU, but I don't want to do this to find that it's not up to the standard of todays coolers. I guess the alternatives that I'd like to compare it to are ~£20 coolers such as the Freezer Pro.

Any ideas on how it might perform? I will want to overclock the C2D to get the best from it.

Cheers,
Nami

For heatsink designed for P4 heaters E5200 is cool CPU.
(of course XP120 looses vey clearly to current top heatsinks)

Your xp120 is better that a freezer pro, but it's not compatable will all mobo's as it will overhang the socket significantly (had one myself on a abit AWD9 max)

you need to get a tower cooler or the SI-128se to see any improvement but they are all over budget.

It will be fitted to an Asus P5K SE. If it's likely to cause issues, then I think I'd rather sell it in the MM and buy something new.

Can anyone recommend a better option for sub £30? I see quite a few coolers that look good in that price bracket, but knowing which one will offer me the best balance between cost and cooling is what I can't determine from looking at the OcUK website! Essentially, if I can spend £20 and achieve 95% of what a £30 cooler would achieve then I'd opt to the lower end of the price bracket. However, if there is a significant difference in a £30 cooler, then I believe that would offer me better value for money.

Just looked at some images - top and left of the socket are tight (simular to my Abit) but loads of room for the ends of the heatpipes if pointed towards the ram.

If not the Tuniq Tower as it's on this week only
