Thermaltake Symphony Mini

Am considering the Thermaltake Symphony Mini for cooling an overclocked D805 to 4ghz. From reviews it does appear to be one of the best far better than the poor reserater plus but is it good enough for overclocked cpus?

Well, I cannot really comment on the thermal qualities of an overclocked D805 chip at 4ghz, but my girlfriend has the original and much taller Symphony and it copes with the thermal output of AMD X2 at 2.5ghz in the summer heat admirably.

Keep in mind that although this is definately the best all in one external unit I have ever come across, it cannot be described as extreme cooling. The two pumps are definately low flow and although I have had good results with 8/6mm hose on other watercooled systems, the hose on the Symphony seems to be have an even smaller internal diameter.

The Symphony Mini and the 'Not so Mini' Symphony are great looking bits of kit, cool very well compared to their noise output and require very little maintenance. You might want to think carefully before you buy if you want to get a more extreme overclock.

Anybody who doesn't mind a small bit of fan noise and was in the market for a Reserator should definately look at these.

Oh, and you can use the box from the larger version as an extension to your house. ;) :D

@OP: In a word - No.

I can personally recommend NOT to go with the Thermaltake water cooling solutions for the overclocked PenD 805.

Cooling this sucker at 4.0Ghz is an absolute MONSTER of a job. It quite possibly has the highest thermal output of any chip I've seen overclocked.

My own w/c setup of a Bigwater SE has taken some serious tweeking to get it running at 4ghz, and I have to question the amount of time and effort involved with getting one of these kits to cool sufficiently at 4Ghz.

The only reasons I went for the Thermaltake was A) My local PC stockist could get it in for me at a decent price and B) its a nice gentle introduction into W/C as everything is very 'noob' style about these kits - a trained monkey could fit one of these kits.

At best, the low end kits will only cool as well as the best air cooling available, and to do more with them requires high output, noisy fans.

Don't get me wrong, Thermaltake kits are great for non/low over clockers who want to get into W/C at a bargain price - but don't expect to buy their kits and get maximum overclocking potential out of your 805.

You'll be sorely dissapointed.

Nooooooooooooooo, not another Thermaltack thread.

week pump, old waterblock design, small tubing = poor poor poor.

Get a Swiftech Apex Ultra and be done with it.

I've heared about this. How noisy is it and since am a n00B in water cooling would I be able to fit it with no problems? I want at full load to have less than 60C.

You can easily fit the kit into most cases. It's pretty quiet and temps will be well under 60c load. It's the best kit available!

Have in mind that the water cooling its going to have to cool down an overcloked pentium D 805. Also i want to ask if the Apex ultra currently on sale on this site has the new improved MCP655 pump rather than the a bit noisy older one. Also am thinking of buying a block for the VGA and chipset as well. Am I heading right? I hope the maintainance part of it won't be frequent or time consuming. Thanks for your help.

Not a problem

Very good Question. One for OCUK!

The old D4 isn't THAT bad, but annoying non the less.

The Swiftech VGA block is essentially an Apogee for GPU IIRC.

Don't bother with Chipset / Northbridge watercooling.

The MCP655 (Laing D5) is the newer quieter and slightly more powerful version, reviewed here linky

Thank you DaveMac and Weescott. I'll send an email to OcUK to ask about the pump. Could you also recommend me a good case so i can fit easily the Aptex and also 3 HD's and 4 drives. I spare no expense but i would feel silly to spend more than £120 for a case so my rigid positionality on this asks for a not so expensive tower :D

I am going to be completly biased and recomend the Lian Li PC 60+.

But I have to ask; what are the '4 drives' you mention?

Are you going to fit the rad internally?

The Apex comes with a 'rad-box' mounting that allows fitting to a 60mm, 80mm, 92mm or 120mm rear case exhaust fan.

Very weak AND unreliable pump, not just an old waterblock design, it's also a crap waterblock design and the small tubing is just a joke, an utter joke.

AS said, go for the swifty, it knocks spots out of any other kit just about and can only really be beaten by a custom setup.

All the points you make here bundles are true of the Thermaltake kits, I have to agree, but they aren't quite THAT bad. They'll stll do the job for a cheapie newbie like myself when venturing into W/C. They just cannot stand upto any half decent kit, and a custom setup will leave them for dead in yesteryear.

I checked it and i dont like the design of the case. I won't need a PSU.I dont know what to choose. I do need more than 4 x 5.25" external Drive Bays

2 dvd writters 1 fans bay with speed adjustments and 1 sound blaster extrernal drive. I want to fit everything and have some room to spare. My current full tower is really not *full* at all.

I contacted OCUK and they said the following regarding the swiftech pump:

''Unfortunately we would not be able to inform you of what version of the pump is
supplied with the Kit as they are sealed and we would be unable to open a sealed
package.
If you wanted a different pump then you would have to purchase the new pump from
our website we would not be able to offer a trade in service for the old pump''

So if i buy the swiftech i might have to spend an other 50 in order to get the improved pump.
