Hi all,

Just been looking at my stats, aint got a clue what they mean, so are they any good, and any ideas what i could likely get (im on 2mb at the mo with no probs).

Line Attenuation 44db down 11.5db up stream
nosie margin 17db down 23db up stream

Thanks. :)

My stats are close to yours i have 42db downstream though, from my experience you probs hit 3-4 meg max, 17db noise downstream doesn't leave you much room from what i seen 10-20db is ok to not get disconections but obviously pushing your line more will drop the noise db down lower.

I was on 3 meg all the time on my old router upgraded to another one and my speeds went up, seem to hold around 4 meg speeds now but do get constant re-syncs, can be 5840 for a day then drop to 4968 then back up higer then down.

What do these stats mean?

I have:

Noise margin:

up: 20db
down: 8db

Attenuation:

up: 30db
down: 48db

Connect at 3986/448

Just as Jabbs posted between 3-4.5meg is realistic.

This is an excellent checker http://www.dslzoneuk.net/maxspeed.php

Noise Margin
The higher the number the better for this measurement.
6dB or below is bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems
7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions
11dB-20dB is good with no synch problems
20dB-28dB is excellent
29dB or above is outstanding

Line Attenuation
Measure of how much the signal has degraded between the DSLAM and the modem. Maximum signal loss recommendation is usually about 60dB. The lower the dB the better for this measurement.
20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues

I am sync as follows atm so i know a re-sync is due anytime.
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5920 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 42 db 12 db
Noise Margin 2 db 26 db

There's a different guesstimator in the FAQ too.

Be warned that both are just estimates though, and your mileage may vary. It's also possible that your SNR margin varies, so what you get will depend on when you connect.
For example, mine varies like this:

So I'd get 8Mbps (roughly) at most, and round about 3-4 at minimum (no doubt with plenty of loss of sync in the interim).

Thanks for that, doesn't seem to bad i suppose, im on 2mb now and i find that fine for me, so to double it would just be a bonus i guess.

Thanks everyone. :)

I did put my phone number and postcode into that checker an it said 7mbs or more, i knew i wouldn't get that much. :p
