Well my "Ultima OC HD 4870" arrived today, and ive set it up.

One issue (unrelated) is that my Samsung monitor is going to have to go back, some nutcake at the factory stuck the stand in wonky and it sits on the desk and slants downwards. There are 3 screws at the back to remove the arm (to fit one of those swing arms on instead i guess) so i took it off to see if i could solve the problem myself -- no such luck, the thing was installed wrong and i cant do anything unless i start dismantling the springs and urmm yeah no thanks...

Anyway, that aside i just got through the Vista installation and poped open CPUID Hardware Monitor. The temps kinda concern me...

the HD temp is reading 35*c which is ok i guess, the GPU temp is 80*c..... which for IDLE is kinda WTF? the CPU core temps appear to be 50*c/48*c/50*c and 46*c.

I know thats not nuclear, (well excluding the GPU :p) but the CPU temps seem a bit high considering all ive done is sat here typing this post so far. That GPU temp is nuts, i heard that the 48xx run hot but 80*c doing nothing??? Its not moving btw its just sitting there at 79/80*c. When i start playing a game id expect any GPU tempt to go up by at least 20*c but that would take it to 110*c.... if i wanted a bonfire id have bought some wood XD

Thoughts?

The 4870 temperature is about normal, the fan profiles for the 4850 and the 4870 are currently broken and they are fixed at somewhere between 14% and 20% fan speed even at mega high temperatures (fix no doubt incoming in a future driver revision). My 4850 ran at 80c idle, 90c load before I bought an aftermarket cooler.

The CPU temperatures are kinda high for a G0 Q6600 with an Freezer 7 Pro, although it is overclocked. I wouldn't be overly concerned as long as they don't escalate too much when under load, say 70 ideal, 75 max.

Really though I'd be wondering if the case cooling is somewhat off. The hard drive is a bit above normal, the graphics card is a bit above normal and so is the CPU. Say about 5c per item. I'd maybe be looking into the case cooling and make sure that one of the fans isn't backwards or something and they if they are Antec TriCool's that they aren't all set to "L" (low).
