Hi guys, I'm in my second year of doing a BSc (Hons) in Applied Computing and Business and we've been told to start thinking about what we might like to do as a thesis. Everyone in my group seems to be specialized in a certain area of IT, whereas my knowledge is generalized. Obviously, it would be a good idea to do the thesis around what I would like to do after the degree. And what I would LIKE to do is open up a store (or e-store) selling computer hardware, building high-end rigs (for gaming and graphics), but I know the success of this is unlikely (although it does fill a niche in my area) and even if it was a possibility, I'm not sure how I can base a thesis on this.

Could anyone perhaps give some examples or some guidance on how I can apply my skills and knowledge of computer hardware to other areas/topics that I could use for my thesis? Any help would be very much appreciated! :)

If thats what you want to do after graduating, make it your thesis.

Write a full business plan - thats your business criteria satisfied
Prototype/make a web app for a consumer to spec up a computer rig - thats your computing end satisfied

Are there any specific criteria for it? As with Criminology (my area), you couldn't do something as vague as the above, it has to be quite specific. It may be completely different for IT though. If you can do a business plan though, I'd definitely go for it. As if your going to do ~12,000 words, you'll be sick of it by the end so you need something you're passionate about to get you through it.

I think it does need to be more specific or at least it was when I was at uni.

I did mine about data subscription over a mobile network, wrote in detail about methods of data then made a mobile app as an example to show data subscription.

If you going to write about eCommerce you would need to think of a part of that and write about that part in detail.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking.

That depends completely on the institution and course - I would be astonished if a degree in Applied Computing and Business would not accept a business plan with software development brief and prototype as a final year project!

Which is why students should discuss these issues with their personal tutors and/or project supervisors, at their earliest convenience.
