After about 12 years in PC gaming, I realised that I've never looked into or played this game, after watching some youtube clips I believe I have missed something epic, so I guess its time to fill in the blanks :P

Would it be better to play the 3rd instalment in the series or go back and play 1 & 2 first?

I would say atleast play the first game at some point ideally first as it lays the foundations of the world/politics and fills out the backstory the other 2 build from.
The 2nd game felt quite self contained to me so you won't lose much by not playing it. You just won't have much face time with the creations of the metal age.

also www.ttlg.com is usually a good place to go for help getting thief to run.

2nd one is the best by way, truly epic game, tho being somewhat dated now probably not as compelling as it used to be. 1st one sets the background but lacks the polish and scale of the 2nd one that built well on top of the foundation it laid. 3rd one really didn't do it for me personally.

Something midly interesting about the 2nd game, a lot of the maps you can play backwards instead of rushing to the next one and find previous hidden areas and extra sideline stuff that fills out the story that you won't necessarily notice or be able to access at first.

Awesome games, some of the most atmospheric I've ever played. Thief holds the crown for giving me the biggest scare in a video game, headphones were broken as I flew out of my seat in shock :D

Thanks guys for the info, I'll probably start with the 1st and work my way through them all

the 4th was what sparked my interest to look up the series :D

Thief is up there with Deus Ex for me. Both games did things that no other game at the time were doing.

Thief 1 is my favourite because it is the one I played first, and when the demo was released, I played it to death until I bought the full game - so I have a lot of fun memories playing through Lord Bafford's manor over and over.:D

Thief 2 went the extra mile with just about everything, and really expanded on the strengths of Thief 1, but I just lost my way with that, as it felt bigger and more time consuming than Thief 1 (and Thief 1 can be time consuming with some levels).

Thief 3 is very good like Thief 2. It actually reminds of DX:IW in a lot of ways in the way it looks, except much better. I never got round to playing it properly though, and may revisit this one myself because some people have said it is better than the first 2 games.

It's not better than the first 2 games, except it has an absolute masterclass in level design. Shalebridge Cradle. The game does suffer a bit from consolitis in that the levels are less sprawling than the first games and sometimes has loading screens midlevel.

...and the respawning enemies. Still - good game.

First game had the best story. Second game was a bit more hardcore, more of a challenge..a true PC stealth game..probably wont see anything like it again.

The Thief games are good, unfortunately I've yet to complete any of them. I think a Steam Thief pack is in order in the next sale, then once modded...:)

One of my favourite series of all time. Gutted I was suffering from this known bug in Thief 3 where you couldnt climb ladders or pick locks (would just zoom in to the lock but you couldn't pick it) - never got it fixed which made me give up on replaying this great game.

The cradle level is one of the best and scariest levels of all time.

They do look and feel very dated now, however they are some of the best PC games ever and I still love to play them, and still feel the atmosphere. There are loads of excellent fan made missions and addons as well.

Addons you say? :o I've only found a texture pack for the 3rd game a few fan missions and thats it so far.

That was caused by the game running too fast. Use Vsync to force it to 60fps max and it works fine.
