Thief vs Heat

I've just watched Thief again, and have seen Heat twice as well. I think Thief has a slight edge on Heat, and it's the very strong Frank character and atmospheric music that provides it.

I expect I'll be in a minority on this, as I know how cult Heat has become, but this is a genuine case of going on the merits rather than trying to be different. :)

Oh yeah, for anybody who doesn't realise why I'm comparing the two, it's because they're not only a similar style of film, but both by Mann as well.

Not seen Thief myself either, which is exactly why I didn't post pretty much the same response as MarcLister, even tho that thought did cross my mind.

If thief is the film with the Diamond robber, played by james caan i think. then yeah i think Thief is a better film.

Its a brilliant film. Michael manns first direction i think, and it just wreaks of style and class.

That's the one, and I agree about the wreaking. :)

Given the high praise that Thief has recieved in this thread, I shall be adding it to my rental list so I can see for myself.

I haven't seen Thief in years, but as of this moment I'd go for Heat. The very first film with both Pacino and Deniro  . Brilliant stuff. The only thing that tarnishes my view on Heat slightly, is the fact I've seen L.A. Takedown, which is basically the same film only with C-List actors. Whenever I think of Heat, I think of the poor L.A. Takedown. I'll give Thief another watch, and see how I feel. :)

i loved heat but i think the crappy airport shootout ending let it down.

thief is cool especially when caan goes beserk on the bad guys because they wouldnt let him have "his end"

I disagree, LA Takedown is not a poor film when judged on merit. Maybe to people who watched Heat first it might seem that way, but it has quite a dark atmosphere and is still a good story. I think it's a good example of the difference a big budget can make when you compare the two films - HEAT took basically the same plot and was vastly more successful.

I agree. I saw L.A. Takedown first, and thought it was great. I think Heat was a bit better overall, but that the actor who played the main robber in the former actually did a better job of portraying the nuances of his specific character than did De Niro.

Have just finished watching Thief, can't say i'm not dissapointed tbh.

Not as good as I was expecting given the praise it has received and certainly not even close to Heat.

There's a lot in Thief that I have seen before, though to be fair that may not be the fault of this film as i've probably seen it in films released since this.

That would be The Godfather part 2. Even in Heat I don't think they were on screen at the same time, there was a lot of speculation a while back that they didn't even film the coffee shop scene together and that's why you don't see their faces on the screen at the same time. I'm pretty sure Michael Mann said they just chose to use the over-the-shoulder shots instead.

Never heard of thief :/

:D

Look out for it mate. If you can watch it without comparing it to more modern films with similar styles , you can probably appreciate it a bit more too :)

Heat is very good but the ending was a disappointment for such a well directed movie. Not seen Thief but I will.

edit: Also, Pacino and De Niro have been in the same film long before this, this was the first time they shared scenes though, I think. :)

Sorry, I should have written my post better, it was the first film they shared an actual scene with. I'm not sure about the coffee shop scene like you said, it could have been done individually but the last scene, hand in hand they were definitely together. I'd say they were together for the coffee shop scene though, simply because they would feed of each other in that moment, and the over the shoulder shots were to capture both their reactions individually and spliced together later. Godfather Part 2, as far as I recollect, they didn't meet each other as their parts were set in different eras and filmed in different countries.
