So while sleeping last night me and my housemate were the victims of a proffesional thief.
Broke in through two doors at the back of the property found his keys which were hidden and stole his month old c class 220 cdi merc.

The thief left alone my keys, but did take both our work laptops which were in bags in the hall. I feel for my housemate as he is gutted right now. :(

We are both glad that the keys were hidden down stairs and not in our rooms as this may have meant a man with a crow bar waking us up.

Everything else was left alone including my wallet.

The police have been very helpful but I think the odds of the car being found are slim.

Has anyone else had this happen, kind of shocking thinking we were asleep.

It's a work one so not too worried but had a lot of documents on it and I use it when I work in Sweden which is this week again!

Oops cheers for the typo :)
It is covered under their fleet policy him and his dad run a franchise.

The thread was more to vent and hear other experiances. We are both glad our keys were hidden downstairs and not in our rooms else we may have had a nasty wake up. So that is a back handed positive.

It's just odd he took the work laptops but not my wallet which I left in the lounge...

One thing I learned is they have no gap insurance...

Jimmied a door to an outhouse then smashed a small window to get access to the kitchen. The csi person was able to get some footprints but that's all. Yer kind of glad he found the keys quick you never know how badly they might have wanted it as it seems it was targeted.

Yer possessions are easy to replace its the sence of invasion of having someone in your home while you sleep that I'm finding hard to shake.

I can't be the only one thinking it, 13 isn't so lucky afterall.

On a serious note, glad you're both ok as it must be a terrible experience and certainly not something anyone would want to first wake up to.

I always thought of car thieves as joyride and then dump it, but I guess that's not the case here. So what does the car thief do now, put on fake plates and attempt to sell it?

I always did to, but when speaking to the officer this is not un common. They carry fake plates on them and quite often it's to fill an order the customer made. The officer also said every major road has cameras to identify every plate that goes through it.
By the time you discover it's gone it's half way up the country or in a container. We live close to the docks so could be quite likely.

I suggested to my housemate we get one of those poles that are concerted in the ground that you lock upright so you can't get the car off.

We are planning lots of new things to discourage thieves including boarding up the door they Jimmied as it is not used by us.

That's what we are concerned about he is now thinking of getting something more discreet. It is a shame that people can't have nice things in this world with out others being *****

Odds are it is on a container. However a Gardiner we had round in December to do some fencing and tidying. Sent a message on fb saying only hey good Christmas. This is not a person we know and seems suspicious. :/

I should think about that name change haha my company have just told me I'm liable for my work laptop. Despite the fact they pay tons more to fly me out to Sweden every week for work. Great day plus a mate tried to top himself yesterday so spent all night at the hospital. They say today is the most depressing day of the year...

After seeing the burgled thread in GD I thought I would post an update.

Everything was not as we believed in a move that baffled the police as much as us. The thief was caught on the cameras driving the car under same plates on the Tuesday from Southampton to Portsmouth.

The tuesday or wednesday after it had happened. The police put someone on him to tail him in portsmouth but he got spooked parked up and disapeared. So we got the car back on the Thursday, it had all my housemates items in the car, his suit, shoes work keys etc. The thief had not even put any petrol in the car. The police think he must have hid the car for a couple of days before taking it out...

No laptops were found and after the police took loads of prints from the car they are pretty sure of who it is ( aparently known) however still no news of an arrest.
I am not sure if he is still on the run or they just have not picked him up :/

We are just glad the car is back with no damage and only 20miles put on it.

So when you say the keys were hidden what do you mean? In a coat pocket in the hall?

Just a bit puzzled because some people in this thread are going on about leaving the keys out in the house to avoid being interrogated and you say you are glad they found them, so why hide them in the first place?

Glad he got his car back though :)

The keys were in a drawer near the front door, so not hard to find but not on display. My keys were on the side in the kitchen. though to get to the kitchen also the way he went in he had to go through a gate at the side of the property, then force a door into the outhouse. Then into the kitchen.

My keys were not visible unless in the kitchen. Then he still left them alone in favour of finding the other cars set.

I was wondering why this got bumped, yep an old thread. For those skipping to the end my housemate got the car back and despite the police getting loads of prints from inside the car. They were following the criminal but he got spooked and did a runner.
The police said they knew who it was and that he had prievious, we still to this day have had no mention about an arrest being made.

My housemate got everythign he had in the car back too but our laptops were never recovered. All in all a positive end, but I am not sure how much of this is down to the thiefs stupidity. :)
