Just had a knock on my door from the next door neighbour to tell me my number plates have been stolen. On the phone to the police now :(

Damn! What do you drive?

Would you receive speeding fines if the offenders drove through cameras or do the police check the reg against car spec before issuing them?

I have a 06 Mondy ST TDCI, she said its been added to the national computer so anyone driving with those plates will be stopped and checked.

Including yourself ;) so be prepared to be pulled a few times once you get new plates sorted.

Make sure you carry some ID with you too.

since he has reported it he won;t get any fines if someone does dodgey stuff.
heck even he can now boot it through speed cameras and say it wern't him.

No he can't. Especially if they are front facing cameras.

New plates are on with sticky tape this time so it looks a lot cleaner and I'm only £12 out of pocket for the new ones so could have been a lot worse. Definatly stolen for a purpose though as I park in a garage area well away from the main street which itself is quiet. Scene of crime people arrived and said car was too dirty really.... feel so ashamed

You should feel honored that you got SOC officers attending a stolen numberplate incident! Mostly they will just give a crime number if you report a theft from a car.

Good job for reporting it, they probably have an ST TDCi that they were going to do a job with and so spotted your car and nicked your plates to use on theirs. Will probably be your numberplate involved in an armed robbery in the next few days

Really amazed me where they have taken it from. 25 years of living here and the first crime incident. Unless they got lucky and drove into our cul de sac garage area they must have followed me for them (really not visible at all from the road).

I'm amazed they actualy stole the plate instead of getting a set made up with the same number.

Are you sure it's not just local kids after a trophy off a Mondeo ST.

Dont see why kids would steal two very generic number plates, especially round here.

Exactly, you wouldn't want to draw attention to yourself, it could be someone wanting to avoid paying insurance and tax but then again why would you draw attention to the fact you have stolen the plates, much better to drive round see the same car, note down the plates and get a set made up!

Well the 3 places I rang to get plates earlier wanted to see my V5 but I guess not everyone plays by those rules.

Market, car fair, internet, heck if you do this stuff loads you can even buy the plates and letters yourself.

Will be interesting to see what comes of this, its good to know you're in the clear though!

Someone managed to get a set of plates with my dad's number on a few years ago. Luckily they put then on a 7.5 tonne lorry and he drove a Passat, so it was quite easy to prove it wasn't him when they didn't pay the congestion charge.

It is illegal to in the UK to produce them without a V5, but there are bound to be a few dodgy side street places doing them. Or you can do it online via Irish companies :)

Getting a set made up means one of 2 things:

1) You go into a shop, pay cash but they have seen your face and may have CCTV.

2) You buy online, pay with a credit card/paypal and then they deliver to you.

Either way it leaves a track that the cops can follow.

Well I am impressed, first scene of crime people and now a community support officer going round the neighbours houses to see if anyone saw or heard anything :)

Strange, I was just about to make a post that someone had nicked my brother's numberplates (1.6 astra, very generic again)... unusual as this isn't the area for it. Just wondered what they might get 'used' for by the thieving goits.

(I'm in Harrow, NW London)

Oh no wait - this was posted last month... thought it had been posted today
