So im currently playing on a 1440p moniter and i'm debating the switch as anyone gone from 290x to 980ti?
I'm on a water cooled set up and would eventually get a block for it i think i remember reading that the titan x waterblock is identical?
Also anyone tried the EVGA 980ti hydro copper?

I'm running an Corsair RM750 which is why im not thinking of CF as i think in right in assuming i would need a PSU upgrade to do that.
Thanks for the benchmarks Geeman1979 looks like a noticeable increase in performance!

It's probably the best upgrade available at present. Fury x is a bit dissapointing at present, chance of coil whine, lack of availability and limited overclocking potential. As you will eventually watercool, a 980ti is a good choice.

New drivers aside, it will still be an improvement over a 290x let alone a 390 series card. Unfortunately at present the fury x barely gets near a 980ti. Yes the nv card can be a bit expensive depending on model. But it overclocks pretty nicely on stock volts. Its touted that fury x will improve on this front with unlocked voltage. Which imho is a copout, cards should be compared at the speed theyre sent out from the factory. HBM is a nice addition on the latest AMD cards, but its a wee bit early to tell if it is good for high res gaming.

Not really a fair comparison if not done with the newer drivers, especially with the performance bumps that were had with them on the R9 300 series.

It won't be as big as these show but it will still be a big performance leap, For example the 30 frame improvement in Bf4 at 1440 may only be a 20 frame improvement with the optimizations we've had, It's still a big jump though so it's a good option if you don't want to wait for the fixed Fiji X.

Videos have been posted where it shows fury x starting to struggle at 4k with its ram configuration in certain games. Maybe its badly coded games, which seems to be the norm now. But with HBM being a new technology, it's maybe best to wait and see.

Which is all fine and dandy with BF4 but most of the reviews are SP results which are irrelevant anyway - MP is far more CPU dependent anyway.

TBH,nobody has asked what CPU the OP has and what games they are playing anyway.

Going from a 290x to a 980ti makes a massive difference as i have found iv gone for example from about 50- 60 fps on medium to the lowest 80 too 120 fps High settings on battlefield on my 5760x1080 setup. Project cars is playable for the first time too. My only concern was the drivers for Iracing which have had massive issues with nvidia, But taken a gamble, so far touch wood all good.

Which probably means with BF the card was running out of VRAM at a 3 times 1080p resolution, and if not you seem to have had a major problem with your R9 290X 4GB. IIRC,you have an Intel Core i7 too,so it can't be a driver overhead thingy either which is less likely at high resolution.

The OP is at 2560X1440 which won't be as VRAM limited.

Sorry i should have posted my pc specs
im running a watercooled CPU and GPU in a single loop (240mm+280mm radiator)
my CPU is a i7 4790k
I play BF4/GTA V/CSGO the games i'll be playing when there released are fallout4/star wars battlefront / Black ops 3
Hope that helps with my question

Battlefront is basically the same engine as BF4. If I were you,I would wait and see how it runs when released in November, and its a DICE game so you can expect some issues at launch. Probably the same as FO4 too, which I am waiting for.

After all,the GTX980TI cards will still be available then if the R9 290X does not cut it.

My only concern is waiting around for Reference 980ti cards as if i leave it too long my only option is to buy second hand which i'd rather not for peace of mind.
Thats also another reason why im not going crossfire its pretty much impossible now to find a new 290x with a reference PCB.

I heard somewhere that you can actually crossfire the 390 series with the 290X now. If that works it would give you the fastest setup at the cheapest price.
