Hi,

I am travelling to Hong kong in a few weeks I know clothes are cheap but I heard electronic goods such as laptops are dirt cheap.

Any ideas how cheap ?

And also will they work in the UK with our powe supply? :)

yes they will work with uk power. Just need an adaptor. I would definitely get electronics, digital cameras are very well priced. You should be able to get a lot of extras with them as well. Cases, spare batteries etc...

Assuming you haven't been before, you'll be blown away. The number of high rises is insane. i had a great time. :D Think I'll go back in March.

Just got back from a 2 week HK trip.

Electronics arn't as cheap as you'd think - maybe a 10% saving on average?

I picked up 320GB disk drives for £50 each (instead of £77).
Make sure to get a tailor made suit or two!

Don't forget on the way back you have to run the customs gauntlet!

true, but as said, the bargain is in all of the extras you can get.

Been back a few times to see family who reside there. Electronics are not really that cheap compared to existing prices here in the UK from online retailers. Definitely not dirt cheap.

Suppose the advantage is that you're more likely to find a laptop that you want, the same with digital cameras... as they have a lot of them on shelves/display at their computer centres...

MP3 players and an LCD display are pretty easy to pick up over there too.

What is it now? £10 to $150... so there might be a saving.

I picked up an Ipod. Uk retail was £169. Got it for £149 including rubber case, running strap and decent headphones. Not too bad. I really liked the look of the Pentax cameras. They're advertised everwhere.

HK uses the same power sockets as UK

Get a suit from Pacific Custom Tailors in Pacific Place. Not as cheap as some of the street tailors but unbelievable quality and a massive saving over a similar suit in the UK.

I dont seem to remember HK being that cheap for electronics, although you can always haggle a bit i think. I did stock up on memory cards and batteries for my camera though as it was a first stop on a 6 week trip. I think i spent a little less than i would have over here. This was in Times Square (i think thats right). A massive mall we stumbled across.

A couple of tips; dont be scared of the underground/subway. It's so easy to navigate. You can even get it all the way to the massive Sitting Buddha (sorry cant remember real name). In fact they built a skycar thingy there now so you dont have to spend 45mins on a bus going around the jungle, after the tube ;)

I dunno if its the rainy season at the moment, but take an umbrella (or buy one out there)! It's far too humid to wear a coat and you cant swap and change every time you step out/in.

Enjoy your trip -- its a fantastic place. :)

agreed, i definately recommend taking taxi's everywhere. they are all air conditioned. pretty cheap aswell (in comparisson to uk taxi prices) and especially so if there are 2 or 3 of you.
