I'm going to be alone for about 8 hours in a city I've not visited before, before being picked up and taken into care :D

I'll arrive at Belfast International at about 8am, and the day is all mine.

What do I do that won't get me arrested? I've never even considered visiting the city before, and would rather not spend my day in a cinema watching Filth back to back (that actually sounds good though).

What would you recommend, Belfastians?

Get kneecapped

e: I'll try and be more helpful. The city centre, IMO, has little to offer, and if you're not driving then you're kind of stuck. There are some exceptional restaurants within a few minutes of the centre, but eating in a nice eatery alone is... probably not what you're after. You could get a taxi from around City hall or one of the hotels and ask about a tour of the murals and "piece walls", every cabbie will know (iirc they offer this as a touristy thing anyway) and there is an open top double decker tour that takes about 45 minutes - 1 hour iirc, never did it. There's the Titanic tour at the H&W, which I never went too either :p

Aside from that, you could just get a decent book and sit in the Europa hotel piano bar

Get some shopping done at Victoria Square or if you want some authentic Belfast, get up to the Twaddell "peace camp" and learn what it's like to live like a sectarian gypsy.

You're all painting a magnificent picture I have to say! Kind of glad this isn't a holiday I'd just booked.

You'll be grand, the city centre is great. Get the bus directly from the airport to the Europa, get down to the Titanic Quarter for an hour or two, browse around some of the shops in town then get the bus back.

Just dont leave your car on the M1 please

Hah :D

I appreciate the additional info d_brennen ;) but yeah I probably won't eat anywhere fancy by myself. The cab thing looks like a plan, as does taking a book and just enjoying the atmosphere(!?).

I've had a rummage through the visit belfast site and I reckon I should be set up for the day. Bus in, walk around, perhaps tour, lunch and a read in a cafe or similar, Titanic, and that should be me done.

Dare I ask, night life any good? I'm staying with my girlfriend, but she's touring Ireland at the moment so we're both in the same boat when it comes to thinking of things to do. But we'll have 4 nights where I'm sure we'll head back into belfast for.

I never actually did the tour properly, I just got talking to a cabbie while he was driving me home (lived 15-20 minutes from the city) from a boozy evening. He spun the cab around and took me on a tour of all the murals and pointed out all the places not to be a drunk Englishman :p Didn't even charge extra. That's the thing, Belfast people are (generally) really nice and welcoming, often painfully embarrassed by the country's lower IQ inhabitants

Night life is OK, you can't say you've done Belfast til you been chucked out of Mynt or the other gay bar (I forget the name) :p
