Hello all, hope everyone is well, me and 5 friends are going to york this afternoon and staying over friday and saturday, is there any particularly good pubs/places to eat that we should aim for etc? any other tips or advice would be appreciated.

Bettys tea rooms, its epic. There's messages written by old WWII bomber crews on the toilet walls if I remember.

Theres loads to do. I've been there a few times :)

I highly recommend the Castle Museam next to Cliffords Tower. The Yorkshire Museam, which is close to York Minster, is also good. And York Minster itself is worth a look. Or the national railway museam is always good, and free to enter, though they welcome donations. If you dont mind a good walk I would also recommend walking along the old roman walls. Its about a 2 mile walk though if you do the whole thing.

If you fancy something a bit more fun theres Yorks Sweet Story, an exhibit on Yorks confectionary history. You get to sample chocolates and make your own chocolate lolly pop :)

For eating theres more places than you could try in a week, let alone few days. Bettys Tea Room is good, but expensive and you usually have to queue for a table. Borra Borra and Evil Eye are two really good cocktail bars. Oscars bistro is good if you fancy a burger. Red Chilli is a pretty good chinese restaurant. Rustique is a good French style one. Having a pint at the Kings Arms pub is a good experience, assuming its not flooded at the moment :D

If you want a more upmarket meal, you could try Blue Bicycle or The Olive Tree. Both are a bit on the expensive side, but serve high quality food. Or if you would something a little more budget friendly, theres always decent chain locations like cafe rouge (I recommend the steak baguette or the croque madame ;) ) or Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

You MUST visit York Minster. It's absolutely stunning. £12 gets you a ticket that lasts a year, but even for one visit it's great.

Make sure you go up to the top of the tower to have a look round!

+ National Railway Museum if you are that way inclined :)

I resent having pay to go in a house of God.

You should make a donation, like they ask at other cathedrals.

Castle Museum, National Railway, are superb, must do a ghost walk at night, good fun,7.30pm from The Shambles, is the one from Roman Column by York Minster at 7pm.

Some obvious locations mentioned already, but if the weather's ok, just wander around! Wonderful place. It has soul, and a sense of being solidly rooted in the landscape.

The older I get, the more I appreciate the solidity of places which have clearly being around for many generations. They remind you that we're just cogs in the much bigger wheel driving human history. Modern towns and cities just make me feel like fuel being burned in the engine of progress.

So, er... yes. Go gawp at the Minster and walk the walls. :-)

I know what you mean, but as a hardcore atheist I grew to understand the financial pressures these places are under, and you only have to wander around a few to realise just how expensive it must be to keep such marvels going in the modern age. No slave labour to draw on! Not now the Poles want decent wages, anyway. :-) So just look on it as paying to see the medieval equivalent of the space race. These are the Saturn Vs and Space Shuttles of previous generations, and they are every bit as marvelous. Especially when you look close and find the marks of the men who, centuries ago, risked life and limb to build them.

So breathe deep and empty your wallet. You know it's worth it really. :-)

PS Having said that, they're taking the Micky at Westminster Abbey... £18. Tourist trade ripoff. :-) I prefer to wander down the rail line to Rochester and make a £5 donation when I feel the need to immerse myself in a bit of calm and history.

I forgot to mention the York tour boat. But I'd only really recommend doing that if the weather is nice. I think siting on a boat in the rain would be a bit depressing :p
