Booted up this morning to see this:

DQtDwoo.jpg

(pic of my desktop with flickering green matrix type stuff going on - also points to whoever identifies the city centre!)

My Google skills show either a dying graphics card and someone suggested a full power down and reboot (hasn't helped).

Anyone able to confirm what is happening? (also if it is dying graphics card, what do i need to buy as i've not had to replace one before!)

So the green lines only show once the pc has booted, do you see any of it during the BIOS boot up stage or only when the PC is fully booted?

It's either GPU or the screen I think.

Specs of pc would help to start with,

also clean out case fans etc , check cooling is working on the GPU

start from there and see how you progress

what to buy depends what you use it for,

Do you have Afterburner and have you just installed a new driver suite? Your clocks are likely ramped up to 1000+. It's a bug in AB that occurs occasionally when installing drivers. If the clocks are at stock it's likely the GPU. Reseat it and try again

You are the chosen one Neo.
But seriously I think it's the monitor that's broken if not then it's the gpu. It's either one of them. If you have a spare GPU try connecting that one, if you have a spare monitor connect that one.

I'm sure it's either one of them

This is probably the DDR memory on the gpu. I had a similar problem on my 7970 which I fixed by using a heatgun on all the memory chips. I knew it was a dry joint under one of the chips because when I flexed the card it would sometimes work perfectly.

Its in front of the Sigma Restaurant, Sibiu, Romania.

Winner!! Have you been or was it epic googling skillz?

OK, so we think it's the GPU (monitor is fine). Looking at my aged system, what card do i need? (i have no idea about hardware unfortunately!)

My system is used for L4D2, movies and TV and i also do some video encoding.

What card you need depends on what you use it for (as you've stated), and what budget you have.

well that was quick - blue screens, card smells v warm and i think the card has died!

Noticed the card fan was struggling so took it out, cleaned it up (was quite clogged with dust :() But it is still blue screening.

So would appreciate some recommendations asap as i can get one ordered today if i'm quick.

Budget, it's an older system as above, but it is our main pc - so under £200 would do what i need?

Also, might be worth your while having a look in the MM, always a few graphics card for sale in there.
