Think I need a new card for 4k

I'm planning on buying a 4k TV soon enough and currently run my PC through my 50" Sony 1080p TV. I have a surround system etc that does HD audio so want to keep that. My PC is used about 75% as a media player with a bit of gaming and general browsing.

My current r290 from what I can tell cannot do 4k@60hz via HDMI. It can via the display port but all DP > HDMI adapters i've seen, even active one's seem to say its sketchy and from what I can make out some recent AMD drivers have broken the adapters that were working! Plus I spent a lot for my sound system and will be splashing out on a new TV so want things just to work. I am still deciding whether to replace my AV receiver for a 4K version but it won't be cheap so if I could get a card with 2x HDMI out I could save a lot of money.

So I need a new card for HDMI 2.0. I don't really play many games but my r290 has served me well and I am quite happy with its performance so this is simply an HDMI 2.0 upgrade and any additional performance is welcome. It would be great if my new card had 2x HDMI but afaik only some Nvidia cards have this and I would have to spend about £400 for the privilege. I have seen the R480 has HDMI 2.0 but have again also heard reports about recent drivers creating issues again displaying 4k@60hz with HDR etc

Does anyone else use HDMI for 4k@60hz or know the R480 does work fine? Or a dual HDMI card for reasonable money that can at least match my R290?

Any help appreciated.

You'll want a 1080 minimum and ideally a Titan for smooth gameplay and decent settings at 4k. Even then, at times you will see under 60fps.

If you mainly use it as a media player, you could get away with a Geforce 1050 or 1060

Playing games at 4k is so demanding though, it depends what games you occasionally play...

Sorry should have said doh. I don't care about 4k games its just for movie/TV content. Am happy with the 1080p performance of my 290.

I use a rx460 in my htpc, I had to change my 270 as the 460 can decode 4k x265 format, otherwise its done on the cpu and my I3 couldn't cope. So a 480 would do a much better job. Or as said above the 10 series nvidia cards can do this as well.
Oh and it comes up as 4k @ 60hz on my TV.

Your going to need an newer card, an rx480 or a 1060 will be a slight upgrade from your 290 in terms for gaming but you will way the pet you need

In answer to your question, I use my Sapphire NitroOC+ 480 via HDMI 4K@60hz. No problems at all. :)

It even manages Doom and Forza in 4K.
