Think I need a new PSU....

I'm missing 8-pin PCI-e power cables so have had to resort to using the molex adaptors, but my new Saphire 290X is making the PC shut down.
I suspect I'm pulling too much current through the wrong 12v lines and the PSU is stopping, it's supposed to be 850W (can't remember the make, and can't see it either) but without the PCI-e modular cables, I'm a bit stuck.
Investigation with a 2nd PSU shows better stability (30 mins gaming instead of 0)

But I don't think it's a good idea to run like this forever :)
So, the question I have is, what PSU for an old 2500K and this monstrous 290X card?

Hahaha, I just pulled it out of a PC I hadn't used in years, proved the point that it was power that's the problem.

I don't know if I'll crossfire, summer would be unbearable. That and I'd need a new motherboard. Which means a new CPU. So might as well go DDR4.... I'll see what happens when the new intels come.

I'd rather go over the top and increase reliability/lifespan. The PSU I have would probably do it (without the 2nd PSU) if I were using the PCI-e power sockets and not hanging off the molex. But it's time to get a new one, this is 6-7 years old anyway (the temporary helper is, ahem, somewhat older...)

Tonight was supposed to be a gaming extravaganza, not hackaday/research night :(

Overkill? What's that :)

That Link is to an EVGA (made by superflower?) is the same price as the Antec currently, but neither have enough reviews here to persuade me (0 and 1 review :( )
I'm actually put off by the antec as the modular connectors look a bit mad. The EVGA specs say all the right things.

Bank holiday, might mean I won't get a PSU until Tuesday! The monster lives...

jonnyguru rings a bell or 2, first decent PSU testing I ever saw.
The EVGA is starting to win me over.

I just found by accident, the PSU box for the PSU that's actually inside the case, Active Power M668. It's actually been brilliant and is likely only shutting down because of the current draw on the wrong outputs. (I can feel the flak cannons warming up).

I'll keep reading and pick one tomorow, might go for sat delivery and put both PSUs on a well earned break... (Still running both)

It was a little scary at first, but, it actually did the right thing when I screwed up some connections, I'd managed to short the 3v3 to 0v via a HD, nothing died, including the HD. I put a scope on the 3v3 and could immediatly see the problem, and what the PSU was doing to protect itself and everything connected.

I think I'm sold on the EVGA, is it too late for next day delivery :D

I am tempted by that idea but I've not looked at the price to do it (yet).
4 days running 2 PSUs isn't 'that' bad, is it?
To be honest, if I'd known how much heat these 290Xs throw, I might have chosen differently. I knew the watts, I just put a dunce hat on... And all this to play a 30 year old game... (Elite Dangerous)

a 970 now looks the superior choice, even at idle I can feel heat off this card.I suspect I wouldn't need a new PSU either.
My old 7850 and GTX 260 were both fine, but I was able to use a 6-pin PCI-e power cable from the PSU with those. They don't seem to work on the 290X at all.

I am getting a new PSU, and I do know the make and model of the current one(s) (I'm not repeating it tho ;) )
The problem with it is it has 4 12v rails at 20A and I don't have the correct cables to make it work standalone. I've had it for 6-7 years so it's done me well :)
I should be borrowing one tomorow to confirm that the new gfx card is completely OK.
