I'm running at 1920x1200 I've got 6950's in crossfire, and they're quite noisy the mrs complains all the time, so I'm thinking of selling them and getting 7970s in crossfire for lower electric bill and less noise but most importantly min fps of 60fps in crysis1/2 on max settings :D

I think waiting till this time next year for the next gen which was my original plan might push my patience a little too far lol

there really is no point in upgrading your cards!, they are still a sweet cards.
for the money your going to spend on 2 7970 you could watercool your system and they you wont have any noise ;) and you will have money spare and take the mrs for a meal ;)...

Noooooo not water cooling, I know they work really well I have the H80 but the only reason I have that is cos it's a completely sealed system and no chance of my mistakes causing water leaks :P Also with most custom water systems moving the computer becomes a pain in the a$$ whereas air will keep the whole thing more portable. Tried a custom water cooling system about 8 years ago, and never again..

Unless of course there's such a thing like the h80 for graphics cards, but I can't imagine that as there's so many different configs out there.

The 6950's in CF are still real powerful. The leccy saved on swapping for 2 7970's will be minimal. The 7990 is being talked of quite a lot recently, so maybe take a punt on that when released if you still feel you should upgrade?

oh yeah when is the 7990 out? I think what i'm trying to accomplish is that with the 6950's i have great average frame rates, but with something like 7970s in cross fire the minimums should be somewhat equivalent to the averages i've currently got

Would avoid the 7990 if I were you. Unknown yet but the price is likely to be higher than 7970 crossfire and perform slightly worse.

I wouldn't upgrade. Clean your case out, improve your airflow and the 6950's should be fine until the next generation at the minimum.

If you're adamant you want to upgrade then 7970 crossfire is OK but be aware that certain review sites have said that they cannot recommend it at the moment due to issues with the driver software.

Many other people have reported no issues however.

Don't expect a noticeable drop in your electricity bill though :p

hrm that's an interesting result, based on those idle noises though they're the same, so i wonder if the change in cards wouldn't even get noticed by the mrs ;)

I clean the case out weekly with compressed air and a vacuum cleaner but I think the issue here is in this past week the ambient temps are 30c cos the sun blasts our living room for most of the day! Take a look at this, I've not even done any gaming today:

hrm i just played the same level on my new laptop with a 670m of crysis 2 in dx11 and on my desktop with 6950s in crossfire, getting around 25fps on the laptop, and between 45 and 60 on my desktop system... Yet the 670m feels smoother, I think for the first time as I actually have something to compare against I might be seeing microstutter, the difference in the smoothness of playing is quite profound.

I wasn't even doing this to test, it just so happens I played it for a couple hours last on my laptop, and thought I'll have a quick game of it on my desktop.

In that case say I wanted to ditch the 2nd card and do a single card upgrade, 680gtx or a 7970?

I have 1 6950 ICEQ and was thinking about going 670/680 but to me, after a lot of thought, the money for current cards seems a little to much for what id like to spend. Then i found another 6950 ICEQ on an auction site from a reputable shop, it was 130 quid still sealed. xfired 6950s are fine for 1920x1080.
