Hi
Laptop suffered a bit of a fall today, and now even when the power cable is plugged in it says its running from batteries...

Any way to diagnose it? It is an acer...

Thanks
Ash

Does the laptop acknowledge the mains adapter connection (usually an indicator light of some kind). If not, try wiggling the adapter in the port a bit, see if you get any connection.

Chances are, the ports broken though.

Hi
Don't think the fuse has blown. Will check in a min.

Does anyone have an acer laptop? This is a 5051awxmi. Looking at the power socket, it looks like there isn't anything in the center.

see the pics here (might have to view at full size) http://www.flickr.com/photos/ash506/tags/acer/

in the male part, it is like a o, ie witha hole in the middle, so something would go in there it looks like - but in the photos as you can see there isn't anything. But it looks like one bit is bent to the side, i think its this.

I just poked around, and im pretty sure it is bent... and broken :(. How can i go about replacing this?

That's the same laptop I got me dad for x-mas. I have an Acer, too.

There should definately be something in the middle though... To me it looks more like something has fallen out rather than bent - if I look in the back of my laptop, there's a silver metal pole like thing with a silver base (this diagram sorta represents a sideways-cut power socket):

Code:
      _
|     ||      |
|     ||      |
|     ||      |
|     ||      |
|     ||      |
|     ||      |
| ------------|

... lol ...

I think if I were you, I'd order the same socket from somewhere.

And then you have the choice of trying to put the missing bit into your socket from the new one... or trying to replace your socket with the new one.

If you're lucky you might be able to find a technical manual for your laptop, with dismantling instructions. From what I've read, Acer's are difficult to take apart without accidentally snapping bits off, so a technical manual will tell you how to take it apart properly :p

The laptop will have to be striped to the mainboard and the broken socket removed. Then solder a new replacement to the motherboard.
So long as the corner of the motherboard hasn't also been damaged in the fall ,the repair is simple if you have soldering skills. Taking a laptop apart is also fairly simple too. It's putting it back together that some people have trouble with.

I am not happy. It is deff broken!! :(

Is there any batter charger, or a power socket thing that acts as a battery?
