Hi Guys

Was up for my Friday night session of gaming, my PC has been on all day today, though I did power it down to Sleep mode when I was away from home.

Been on the PC gaming since 7pm at 11am I was in Call Of Duty and the game just locked up and I could not exit it, tried Ctrl, Alt, Delete nothing, Powered PC off by pressing the re set button, it started to load ok back to desktop, when I clicked Call Of Duty it started joined a game was in there 2 min locked up again. re started again this time it locked up while loading windows the screen locked up though I heard through the headphones that start up sound for windows and could hear the hard drive loading. PC has been running without any issues for months I have not installed any new hardware or changed the operating system
Tried to re start again and this time it just seemed to hang, no bios screen displayed

Is it time for a new card has my old friend given up :(

sorry to hear mate :( but before you do that test your old card another system even if its your mates

i would get a GTX275 or HD4890 both will be very good freinds to you

Very strange removed the graphics card from the case this morning made sure the fan was not covered in dust, seemed ok

Re fitted it to the PC loaded windows had an hour on Call Of Duty without any issues

Could it have been the heat in the case that was causing it to lock up or maybe it was CPU ????

Could be that. I don't trust the nvidia mobo chipsets though. My Pc started locking up randomly in crysis and such. Eventually it became unstable just in windows. Turned out to be the nvidia 780i chipset on the mobo had gone **** up. It was only just over a year old as well.
If its working ok now then just leave it and fingers crossed it won't go again but if it does I wouldn't just replace the graphics card straight away as it may not be that.

Hey Exibit,

that sounds like it could be any of the following

  • Faulty GPU
  • Faulty PSU
  • Faulty Hard disk
  • Faulty Memory
Have you run some stability tests like Prime95 or IBT to see if the actual computer is stable? Memtest for the Ram, Seagate and Western Digital do their own diagnostics for the disks, try the GPU in another machine or try another GPU in your own machine, test the PSU etc :)

That does sound liek it could be a number of things. I'd run a mem diagnostic programme like memtest just to check that wasn't causing an issue.

When the PC wouldn't go to the BIOS, did the system even post at all? You might also have an issue with your motherboard. Thats what I'd be pointing my finger at, I hate the 680i chipset. Worse one ever after the 780i. socket 775 nvidia chipsets are probably the worse thing ever to happen to PC hardware.

Ok will try memtest first and report back, the pc has been stable without any issue for approx 8 months (since the last time I installed Vista)

Will report back

Ok i have run memtest 2.11

I get an error right at the start, I left it running for 90 minutes and had 523 errors

What should I do now remove all sticks leave 1 stick in the PC and then run memtest again

I have started Prime95 and will see what happens

Sorry on my PC spec the motherboard listed is incorrect, I changed it and am now using Asus P5Q Deluxe

listen guys many thanks for your help, I have identified the faulty stick with memtest and have been in touch with ocz as the packaging says I have a lifetime warranty they have requested that I RMA and they will send me a replacement

Thanks again though I did think it was the graphics card,,,

Strange that my system has been rock solid for so long I found the origianl receipt and I bought this memory in 2007 for £270.00 4 x 1GB
