Past few weeks my pc has randomly been coming up with white lines across my screen, freezing the computer and meaning I have to restart it. First I thought it was something to do with my harddrive but now i'm pretty sure its my 4870X2.
takes longer to boot up and even then before windows comes up loading, there's lines and other stuff going across the screen
Never had a problem with it, and haven't overclocked it.

I'm in safe mode now with thick white lines going up my screen, tried to print screen but it wouldn't come up on it.

Am I right thinking my graphics card is dying? :(

Kinda urgent and unfortunately I don't have a second pc to test it

Assuming you haven't changed anything else, yes it sounds like the GPU.

You should first though 1) reseat the card. Take it out then re-install it. 2) trade any output cables and adaptors that you are using. Try different outputs on the card. Don't assume anything, exchange them. I have seen both go bad.

If no help there you should pickup a cheap ATi card and test it in your PC with the same driver you are using now. That should tell the story. If you have to RMA you'll need the card to use the PC until the RMA arrives anyway.

Unfortunatly there are no diagnostic tests you can do on the card. Well, you might try to read the card with GPU-Z, I had a card crapping on me once and when read with GPU-Z the information was all jibberish.

4870x2 did have a rep for failing.

Good Luck!

Nope, always round about 60

Tried pretty much reseating the card and all that, nothing seems to work for very long. Right now it's working fine for some odd reason, still not going to give this very long

Tried that and nothing

Tried different pci-e slots, cables and nothing. Takes at least a minutes to even get to asus logo

According to the asus website I won't be able to rma this?

Here is a list of examples that likely DO NOT require warranty service.

1. System restarts to a black screen after installation.
2. Display corruption.
3. Random system hangs.
4. Game or Application performance.

Im pretty much getting 2 and 3

Tried reinstalling the drivers but it isn't detecting and hardware.

This may or may not help - I had freezing/crashing on m GTX 280 SLI setup last week. Reverted to older drivers and all problems fixed.

After about an hour of trying to figure it out I went back to some old drives and it seems to be working fine, I'm really hoping this works.

Damn!

Least it gives me a reason to upgrade my pc :o

Now to save up and look for a new gpu. 5870 seems pretty good for the price, any opinions?

From what i've been hearing the Sapphire's rma service isn't any good, either way i'll contact the dealer tomorrow and see what can be done
