As title really, it seems to be quite happy reading CD's and DVDs (Music and Data CD's) although whenever I put any kind of blank media into the drive it spins it around for a couple of minutes and then spits it out :(

EDIT - It seems to like blank DVDs, just not CD-R/RW's :(

I've tried a couple different brands of disc and they all seem to work fine in my PC's drive, anybody have any suggestions of things I could try before I phone Apple and try and arrange a repair, god knows how long that will take though :(

P.s.

Is it just me or is the build quality on their newer products not upto what it used to be, my old G4 PowerBook is still as good as new and its getting on 3 years old now, this is only 14 months old and its already looking a bit shabby (paint fading etc, keyboard feels a bit odd, screen blemishes etc.)

My optical drive failed completely in my MacBook. Are you near an Apple store? Ring ahead and see if they have the parts in stock. I did and once I had shown them the problem they replaced it while I did some shopping. It was ready in under 2hours IIRC.

Put you p0rn on an external drive.

..all those DVDs have taken their toll ;)

I do find the optical drives noisy, my macbooks one is pretty loud at times, particulary when you wake the mac up with a disc in it

Well I live in Liverpool and I think the nearest Apple store is in Manchester.

Little bit of a way to go, although if you say they can possibly do it over the counter for me then it's probably worth the effort, can't be without my laptop at the moment for the next 3 weeks or so due to work :(
