The fans are spinning etc..but there is no activity from the hdd etc..the hdd led just stays on and i dont get any signal through the gfx card.

Tried 2 different graphics cards which are both working, tried 2 different hard drives...tried 2 different PSU's.. same problem...

is it the motherboard?

It could also be a borked CPU...

The problem you describe sounds identical to when I cracked the core of a AXP2800 whilst applying to much presure when fitting the heatsink. At first I thought it was a duff 'MSI K7N2-L' motherboard so I bought a cheapo 'M848ALU' for confirmation, but the same problem persisted, the fans would spin up but I wasn't getting a signal from either of the 2 graphics cards which I tried.

Goodluck.

i always just strip it down to the bare minimums - remove everything except the cpu and power it on and then rebuild it from there. If the cpu is broke it most likely wouldnt even power on

also make sure the case power switc/reset/hdd led connecters are connected properly. my system kept making peeps cos they were connected wrong

The same could be said about the motherboard, and as much as I hope it's not the OP's problem, it's still possible for a system to power on with a broke/fried/cracked CPU installed. :)

Its defenatly not the power switch cables. Iv bought it into the office with me today so im going to have ago at it only connecting the basics..

Im well cheesed off, its been working like a dream for a year and a half, i find a buyer for the full system and was due to sell it today and it decides to go pete tong last night...

Nope tested and its not having none of it..dont get any activity from the graphics, the hard drive etc...only the fans are powering up
