here is my current system all at stock speeds

Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
Intel Core 2 Duo E8600
HIS iCooler V ATI Radeon HD 5850
Corsair Dominator 8GB (4x2GB) DDR2 XMS2 PC2-8500C5 TwinX
Asus P5Q Deluxe
Corsair HX 850W Psu
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA
300gig Maxtor SATA

do you think the new components at stock would give me a nice increase in peformance over what i have now?
i know im going to have half the amount of ram but i could always add another 4gb later if i think i need it
 
I personally don't think the I7 is worth the premium over the I5.

I know you mentioned your current system was at stock, do you plan on keeping the new set on stock also?

The short answer to your question is, yes there will be a noticeable difference in performance.
 
Depends what you use ur rig for. Please tell us....

If it's for WoW like your sig then tbh - overclock your CPU and wait until your system can't really do what you need it to do - THEN upgrade.

Well depending on which games and if you want to play the latest games that do take advantage of 4 cores then yeah go ahead.

But I would seriously test out your games, run FRAPS, test new games and OC the CPU. I would imagine Photoshop runs fine with your current rig?

I would say wait - Overclock your CPU, maybe buy a cheeky SSD? Then upgrade in 6-12months time when the syste is truly struggling.

(This coming from a guy who suffers from chronic upgrade-itchitus)
 
lol thanks for the advice :) i have noticed that a few games suffer from only having 2 cores, gta4 being the main one that i just cant play at the moment, i get a few stutters in bad company 2 and dead rising 2 too that a friend of mine doesnt seem to get on his quad

ill have a go at overclocking first like you said
 
E8600 is more than enough for games atm, especially when overclocked to around 4.0GHz.

The rest of your system is pretty much spot on :)

im afraid the upgrade itch got the better of me this time

i did have a look in the bios lastnight and get up a few tutorials but the thought of new components was a bit much :p

i decided to go for these instead of what i had picked before

As you have gone for the "K" series, you have to clock it!! You really should be banned if you don't. :p
 
The second spec you posted is a much better choice especially if you want to OC! The UD4 is a great board and combined with the G.Skill memory you have a got the base to a system that will last you a good few years with a decent Overclock on it (4.2GHz+).
 
mine is the first release i think, ill look into it tho and see if i can find the packaging to be sure :)

i plan to run it at stock for a few weeks to make sure the components are all ok and then i was going to get a Noctua NH-D14 for my overclock
