Thinking about a build. Advice appreciated.

It's been quite a while since I build a machine. A few years.

My current rig is a 3800+ with a gig of 3200 corsair, a 6800u. Great big 21" CRT trying to crush my desk also.

I have been pushing this back as much as I can. I know there's never really a best time to take the plunge with the PC, I've always known that - seems obvious to me. However at this time things seem different than every other time I've made a PC. The whole DX10/Vista thing has had me pushing this back for a while but I don't think I can hold out.
So I'd probably build with the aim to some upgrading next year (vga probably).

The sort of spec I'm thinking is Q6600, Asus P35 Wifi, 8800GTX/Ultra, probably a couple of good LCD monitors, and 4gig of really decent memory to work with that spec, alongside Vista. Budget can be over 1k but I think the 2k mark isn't sensible right now given I'm probably going to upgrade next year.

Haven't given much to go on there but if any of you have suggestions for a decent build it will help a lot.

I think this includes everything you were looking for. You can save a fair bit of cash by purchasing the two packs of the 2x1gb Geil PC6400 on This Week Only instead of the OCZ 2x2gb but then again it is less upgradeable. I haven't included the Asus as unless you really need the Wifi it probably won't make much of a difference. :)

Great spec.

Might be worth considering Vista Ultimate also, I don't think premium comes with some things like Windows Media Center and going from the budget you have it may just be worth that extra £40 for the Ultimate version. Other than that, the spec above looks excellent.

cheers semi-pro waster. i bought Vista Ultimate months ago. Installed it on my current rig then went back to XP. so, that (i'm assuming) should still work on a new rig.

don't know why, I've had Asus the last 3 times I've built. they've always felt solid. my existing rig has an overclocked 3800 and it's never faulted. been really pleased with it.
main reason for the Wifi inclusion is the additional space. i don't know if it's really worth it. i need a good wifi device in there as my router isn't going to be in the same room, so it has to do a good job of picking the signal up.

overall looks decent. how good are those monitors. would a Dell be better?

Home Premium does indeed come with Winows Media Center. :)

Ohh, never knew that. I always thought, and did hear, that it was an additional extra with Vista Ultimate. Good to know though :)

Yep, Home Premium is sure a great Operating system for the price to be honest. I dont think Ultimate is worth the extra £60.

I have tried Ultimate and the extra features i just didn't use, may be different for other useres but i think the majority of people would find Home Premium just right. :)

I'm quite fond of Asus motherboards as well, my last 3 builds have used them without any problems but this time round I'd probably go with Gigabyte unless they lacked a feature I needed such as WiFi (I don't really get on with wireless networks but that is a different story ;)). I don't know too much about wireless so maybe check in the Networking sub-forum to see what is recommended there.

The monitors have decent specifications and the recommendations on the OcUK website seem positive but again you might want to check the Monitors sub-forum to make sure. :)
