Hi there,

I built my PC 4+ years ago now (I have added a few bits along the way) and I am wondering about a refresh. I like to game (Cyberpunk, dark souls, football manager), and I work on it too, but nothing demanding, MS Teams, office etc. My current set-up
  • CPU - Intel Core i9-9900K Desktop Processor 8 Cores up to 5.0GHz Unlocked LGA1151 300 Series 95W (BX806849900K)
  • Mobo - Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Ultra Intel Z390 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard MB-577-GI
  • GPU - MSI GeForce RTX 3080 10GB GAMING Z TRIO LHR Ampere Graphics Card
  • RAM - Patriot Viper Steel 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 PC4-28800C18 3600MHz Dual Channel Kit (PVS432G360C8K)
  • CASE - be quiet! Silent Base 601 Midi-Tower Case - Black Window CA-12H-BQ
  • PSU - Corsair RMx 750w 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply (CP-9020179-UK) CA-23W-CS
  • HDD 1 - Samsung 970 PRO Polaris 1TB M.2 2280 PCI-e 3.0 x4 NVMe Solid State Drive HD-23S-SA
  • HDD 2 - Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500 GB PCIe
  • Cooling - Noctua NH-U12A High Performance CPU Cooler
  • Monitor - Dell S2721DGFA
I have been hanging on to get a bigger monitor, ideally around 32 - 34" and it would need to be good in games but also in normal PC use. The closest I have seen is the Dell Alienware AW3423DW but I wonder if I should hang on a bit longer but move ahead with the PC component update.

If I was to upgrade, it would probably be the CPU for an i5, i7 or i9 Raptor lake, some DDR5 memory (2x16gb?), a new NVme (a 2tb?) and Motherboard. I would need to check to see if my Noctua NH-U12A is up to the task, but would definitely need a new bracket I think. Would the PSU by fine? Perhaps stick with the graphics card for now.

Any thoughts?

The alienware would go with your current spec pretty nicely and be a nice upgrade.

The cost in upgrading your current cpu etc for what you gain performance wise is very high, I looked at almost an exact upgrade recently from a 9900k setup with that monitor & a 3080ti.

I ended up picking up a 12700k / ddr4 board to keep the costs down, I haven't noticed any change in real world performance though..

Just looking into this again, and I just found out about the Dell Alienware AW3423DWF which is a bit cheaper. Quite tempted.
